I had no idea that this site was here!! I can't tell you how happy I am to find you all! Today was dsy #1 and I had a very hard time! I am diabetic and plan to post there as well but thought I would share a bit aout my day here for now. I had a great eating day....of course it would not be normal for me of I did not CRAVE carbs on and off all day! I was on Atkins once before but gave up because I felt dizzy alot of the time. I remember it only took a couple days and I was over the cravings. My problem today was I did not feel good the last 1/2 of the day. My blood sugars were fine but my bowels went crazy and my tummy felt sick by tonight........I don't know if I have a flu bug or if it was related to the diet? I decided that because I had had no carbs all dy that I would eat 1 slice of whole wheat toast with a little peanut butter on it. I felt better. I am not giving up. I will give it a go tomorrow again....I really think I just happened to start on the day I caught a flu bug! Does anyone ever feel sick like that? I felt like my arms weighed a ton and achy all over by this evening!! I want Atkins to work for me and I feel so hopeful because I have found this site!! Looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing!! I looked thru some sucess stories and pics....WOW...amazing!!! Dorrie

Re: I Can't Believe I Found This Site!!
It's called the induction flu. You just have to weather through it. It is just the carbs you are addicted to trying to get you to cave. You had that bread and you felt better right? Of course, that's the drug your body wanted. When I had the induction flu in January, I really really thought I caught the real flu but sure enough I came out of it and it wasn't. When it is the real flu, at least one other person around you is sick. No one was. It kicked my butt for several days. Luckily, it fell on a long weekend and it didn't affect my life too much.
You just have to tell yourself "I can do anything for 14 days." And once you get through induction, you will have a solid foundation for the rest of your diet and you will be very happy you did.

Just like the regular flu, not much you can do but wait it out. If you can, boil some chicken and drink the broth and such, simple things. Best thing to do is eat as cleanly as possible with no cheats. You will get over it quicker and when you come out on the other side, you will have better energy and your craving will be lower. I feel for you. Hang in there. It is really worth it!

Re: I Can't Believe I Found This Site!!
Welcome. The induction flu will pass. It usually lasts 3-5 days then your body adjusts to the new way of eating and you start to feel more energetic and in control. Have you read the book? Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, edition 2002. Reading it will help you develop a positive attitude about the changes you are making and the what, when and whys of the program. Come here often and let us share your success. You can do it, we're all here for you.Starting Date 3/12/04 285/165/145 - F

Dedication gives wings to our dreams and keeps them in flight! In One Word...COMMITTMENT.

That doesn't sound like Induction Flu, Dorrie. That sounds like good, old fashioned flu. Yuck! It'll be compounded by induction flu, but if you hang in there, you can blame feeling like garbage on the bug instead of the planOriginally posted by DorrieOH MY GOODNESS....I FEEL ROUGH...IT IS MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND I WOKE UP GAGGING AND CHOKING AND COUGHING UP PHLEGM!! i HAVE A TICKLE IN MY THROAT AND IT HAS CREATED A CONSTANT NEED TO GAG! Be sure to read the book- and make sure you're not going all day without your carb allowance. If you spread your carbs over the course of the day, it'll help eliminate cravings and stabilize your blood sugar. Induction starts off with 20 grams of carb, the vast majority of which should be coming from veggies. The rest will come from cheese, eggs, etc. If it's not on the list, it shouldn't be crossing your lips.
Hang in there & welcome to ADBB!

Re: I Can't Believe I Found This Site!!
I agree with Brook. From my experience, Induction Flu isn't typically THAT flu-like (ie the phlem and severe stomach issues), plus it typically kicks in later in Induction (not within the first 8-12 hours of being on the plan) once your body starts to minimize those carb reserves. I think you may just actually be down with the cold or a stomach virus. =(
I also suggest reading through the whole book - its my lifesaver on Induction! =)Start: 162.0 | Current: 161.0 | Goal: 120 | Age/Height: 25/4'9" | RESTART DATE: 09-01-2008 | PHASE: Induction

Re: I Can't Believe I Found This Site!!
My induction flu was that bad each time. The first time, I thought it was a real flu but then when I did induction again in January, it was the same. I used to get colds easy and have allergies so maybe that made a difference, I don't know. But it put me in bed for days.

Re: I Can't Believe I Found This Site!!
My induction flu hit in the middle of day 2 when all my carb and sugar stores had been used i guess. My worst complaint was the severe headache. Partly because of caffeine withdrawal partly just the induction flu. Last time I did atkins had the same severe headaches during the initial week but wasnt a caffeine user prior.
My induction flus only last a max of 5 days but by day 3 they were better.
Its like this:
There are some ppl who wont do atkins or stick with it because of the rough induction period while your body adjusts to burning fat for energy instead of carbs.
However, for any real success dont we usually have to make some kind of sacrifice or struggle?
What about those ppl who go through gastric bypass because they want to lose weight so badly. They are well aware the recover is severe. And from what I have seen, it really is. six weeks or more of misery sometimes. When I think of that, I think 3-5 days or "blah" feeling or fluishness isnt a lot to get the same results.
Thats just what got me through it anyway.
You can do it!!!!!!!!!
You just wake up one morning (day 3-5 or 6) and all of a sudder, you feel awesome!!! Your mind is clear and not all foggy, your sharper, more energetic, and you feel like a normal human again. INstead of being so fatigued all the time that if the phone was too far away when it rang, you just didnt answer it, haha. (yep I did that!)
I'd be lying if I said some mornings during those first few days of induction I didnt think about just quitting, but I kept going because as bad as I felt during those few days, they were nothing compared to how bad I felt being fat.
See it through and you wont regret it!Mindy
