  • Doctor's visit..

I'm Scott from Atlanta I also was told i have Type 2 diabetes. I just started Atkins last week and i'm on day 8 of induction. I was reading about the fight with Type 2 Diabetes.
I went to the doctor yesterday, and mentioned I've started Atkins, the doctor was trying to discourage me about doing so. She stated that the brain needs 150 carbs to function, thats why we fell cloudy for the first few days because our brain is in a fog due to the lack of carbs. Also more importantly she informed me that this lack of carbs forces the liver to work harder to produce carbs since i'm not giving it enough to function correctly.
After all our discussion we did a check of my glucose levels To her surprise my glucose level had dropped from 303 - 148 I'm totally Excited!!!
This came with prayer, 12lbs lost on induction, and with only after 8 days on Atkins. I've decided to continue on my quest with Atkins. I still have 100lbs to go, but seeing this kind of results in a lil over a week i know this is for me..
Can anyone tell me if thier doctors gave them the same information? Also if with being on Atkins thier health turned around?

    Thanks Much!

    Re: Doctor's visit..

My mother didn't have diabetes but when she went on Atkins and finally met her goal a whole bunch of healthy things happened to her! Her skin cleared up, her knees were no longer strained (she was bedridden so many times because of how weak her knees were), she stop having womanly infections, etc.

I've read a lot of success stories from people on this board about how their diabetes have gotten so much better from being on Atkins.

Congrats on your succes that's great!!! I'm curious did your Dr. continue to bad mouth Atkins after she took a look at your glucose levels??

Hi Scott, welcome to the board! I can understand you being excited with your new blood sugar level 303 to 148, that is fantastic! I bet your doctor changed her tune when she seen that. Twelve pounds lost in a week's time. That is like a big sack of potatoes gone from your body for good. Keep up with the good work and you will continue to see excellent results.

        Re: Doctor's visit..

A process called gluconeogenesis takes place in our livers to produce all of the sugar our brains and other organs need. This is done without ingesting carbohydrates. Jimmy Moore has a pretty good explanation in his blog here:

Gary Taubes is the author of "Good Calories, Bad Calories". It's a great book, and definitely will answer all of your questions. In the meantime, here is a video of him lecturing at UCLA Berkeley http://webcast.berkeley.edu/event_de...ebcastid=21216

He addresses the whole gluconeogenesis cycle and many other things.

Congratulations on the decision to get healthy. You've made a great start. I'll second the recommendation of Taube's book. It's not an easy read but it sheds light on the lack of science behind our current (SAD) diet. The research says one thing; public policy goes in the opposite direction.
