  • Starting My Journey...

Hi everyone! My name is Brandee. I have been lurking around this forum for a couple weeks now and I am finally convinced to start on my journey to a low-carb lifestyle. I don't want to look at this as a diet, as so many others say... I want to change my life. I am 28 years old and 263 lbs. I have never been a small person... I always remember being the "chubby" kid in our group or the "bigger girl". Now it has gone beyond that and I'm very concerned for my health as I get older and grow wider. I have lost weight before on other "diets", yo-yoing up and down, doing my body more damage than good. So here I am... I am ready to climb this mountain and stay at the top. Wish me luck!
    Brandee

HI Brandee, welcome and good for you !! You took a big step toward regaining your health.
Take full advantage of the board. You might look into both a journal chat and a journal stat to write your weight and menu and progress in, the chat we can all join in and see how you are doing and it is more of a fun place to visit and journal your progress in a more fun way than the stat journal.
Be sure and read up as much as you can, the book if possible but at least all the info about induction on the board, make sure you have all the facts and you will do great !! Read a lot and ask questions, it helps so much to have this community around you.
I am looking forward to seeing you on the board !!

Welcome Brandee, I'm new too. I'm on day seven. I know that seems like nothing but it's huge for me! I've considered Atkins and done day one at least four times and gave in before supper time This time I've made it to the end of day seven. I know I can hang in here. So can you. Best wishes.

                        Re: Starting My Journey...

Hi Brandee and all the newbies to Atkins! You sound like you are ready for this. I have a couple basic tips that have worked for me when the going gets rough--

                        1) If you cheat one time, leave there, at one time--because if you make a day of it may end up making a week or month of it. Getting back on the wagon ASAP can help minimize damages.

                        2) Don't beat yourself up over cheats. If the guilt makes you feel like a failure, then you can slip into thinking you aren't worth the effort. That's when you are even more vulnerable.

                        3) Don't let the scale trick you into giving up. Weight loss isn't linear-- it goes up sometimes, it sticks at the same number for weeks sometimes. If you have faith it will eventually move.

                        4) DON'T GIVE IN to the "just one bit is no big deal" mindset. Thats how I gained back 15 of what I had lost. One little slip leads to another and before long you get sloppy enough in your accounting to result in gains and they come fast.

These four things have been some of the biggest stumbling blocks for me in the past. I have the first three down cold, but I know MY lifelong battle will be the "just one bite" mentality. Maybe I will add a line about that in my sig to remind me daily! LOL

                        GOAL ONE 228
                        (take 2)
                        GOAL TWO 213 (personal goal)
                        GOAL THREE 199 ONE-DERLAND
                        FINAL GOAL 165

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Jill, that is awesome, I agree with every single thing you said. You are so right !! That is such great advice for all the newbies.
The only thing I can add is take it one day at a time. It is so easy to say, wow, I have only lost such and such and I have to lose so much and it will take so long, those are dangerous thoughts that I still occassionally fight off once in a while myself. Time passes whether we are fat or thin, dieting or not, so make the time that passes by worth it and use it to get to goal, if you get those defeatest thoughts just tell yourself how well you are doing and that in another week you will be doing even better, it does get easier over time. You just cannot let yourself get overwelmed. That is why I work on just thinking about doing well today and I will take care of tomorrow , tomorrow !!

Hey... I am still trying to navigate myself around the website here... can anyone tell me how to start a journal stat/journal chat? I have looked around and I can see where to blog... is that what the journal stat would be? *haha* I know I sound ignorant, but give me a break... I've been carb-deprived for almost 4 days now! *teehee* thank you guys so much! I've never met so many supportive and wonderful people in one place!
