Hi! I am a 31 year old female. I had an eating disorder for 5 years and am proud to say I am no longer on that road of destruction!!! I just started the atkins diet and am having troubles losing weight. I was wondering if it could be because my body isn't used to food??!! Maybe I messed up my metabolism some how? I am very determined to stay on this diet and I need support!! So happy to be here!! Thanks!!

Re: recovering eating disorder.
I would not be surprised if your body hoards its fat because of your history. Keep on course until your body starts to "trust" that the supply chain will not be disrupted and it will eventually come around, but be prepared to be patient. Those of us that have gained and lost before know that it seems to get harder each time to get things going. You may be in the same boat. There are a number of members here with an eating disorder history. Hopefully they will chime in and shed some additional light on this.

Hi Livvy! yup, if you've made you're body think it has an unsure food supply, it'll hold onto everything it gets. Follow induction to a T. If you still haven't lost, be sure to read Dr. A's section for the metabolically resistant.
Also, post your menus for evaluation to make sure you're not overlooking anything!

Re: recovering eating disorder.
Hello Livvy,
I struggled with an eating disorder for around a decade of my life.
This might be a controversial suggestion, but I'm going to suggest not weighing yourself--at least, not until your well into the Atkins program. There is a tendency for those of us who starve, binge and purge to become quite obsessive about the scale--it defines our life, our self-image, and it is HORRIBLE. And, there are many ways to know if you're shedding weight AND, MUCH MORE IMPORTANT, body fat. You can take body measurements, try on tight clothes now and again, AND, feedback--people notice when you lose weight.
I am planning on hopping on the scale when I'm closer to a "weight" that feels right, and using the scale to maintain (I am a weight gain backslider, yo-yo gainer loser, etc.).
Also, beware weighing, measuring, trying on clothes around your TOM. That can be a huge demoralizing bummer.
Good luck to you!
Another newbie,
Ruth

Re: recovering eating disorder.
I am wondering since you state "you just started" and are "not losing" and your "body is not used to food" how long you have been doing Atkins, how much you weigh, how tall are you and how much do you want to lose?

You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it. ~Maya Angelo~
