  • Hi....I'm new and sad and I...

....am very experienced at sucking people into my posts! Ha!

I'm a 46 year old male. I was recently diagnosed with moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and my doctor suggested I drop 12-15 lbs. No one ever commented on my weight, but I guess the doc knows.

I'm 6'0" and started induction last week. Maybe it is just stopping the junk food rather than actually being in ketosis but I'm shedding weight very quickly. The k-whatever strip thingie went from negative to 15 in about five days.

So, I started at maybe 206, (although as high as 212 in 2008, and I'm down to 198 this AM, which is the lowest I've been in about two years. I want to get to about 188-190 I guess.

Anyway, I'm basically eating meat and cheese and celery and eggs and drinking coffee and water. My cheats are a shot of 2 percent into my coffee and omelets.

I've read through here and I know it is a lot more complex than that, but I figure I'm a short timer, and once I get to my target weight I'll exercise and eat right, etc and see if that keeps it off.

I'm sort of ADD-y, so I don't have a lot of time for reading all the books and -- hey look! A blue car!

So, my question is....what is the best booze for Atkins? Dry white wine I heard?

Re: Hi....I'm new and sad and I...

I think yu really do need to get the DANDR and read it to get the full story of Atkins. The foods you're eating are really limited and not true to the variety that you can and should have with Atkins. Coffee is not recommended unless it's decaf and wine should also be limited to being a rare treat. I hate to seem unsupportive but I'm just thinking that if you're going to follow Atkins then your really should stick to the plan as it is outlined. I wish you the best with yuor weightloss and I'm happy you're losing weight so far. 12-15 pounds is not a lot of weight to lose so you should be at goal in no time flat

Well, I'm just a simple hobbit, but if you are going to have alcohol despite Dez's (board-supported) advice, then I suppose a dry white would be right up there with rum, tequila, and vodka. I wouldn't have thought that rum, made from sugar cane, would be a keeper, but the DANDR book shows 0 net carbs per ounce. Just remember that alcohol slows weight loss regardless of plan as your body stops to burn alcohol for energy before any other source of fuel. Not that a great dragon such as yourself would need any additional fuel...

Dude! These folks on ADBB are not going to take too kindly to your “bottom line it” attitude. Not to say you cannot express that you don’t have as tough a road to hoe as some other folks but they may get the wrong impression. I understand what you are saying. You want to use the Atkins’ approach to drop some pounds, lean up; or however you want to phrase it. My concern is that your “wham-bam” approach may not settle right with a few people. Believe me, I am the same way but until I read the book and did some research, it did not begin to happen.

Dez’ advice is right on point. Get the book, flip through it, and enjoy it. (I bought it at one of those Bargain Bookstores – it was on the $1 shelf).

If you want to get rid of those 12-15 pounds quickly, read the book and FOLLOW IT TO THE LETTER. The reason I can say that is that I read it and lost 12 pounds in one week! No joke. As a matter of fact, last week!!

The book will help you! Also, read some of the other forums. It will give you an idea of the atmosphere of the ADBB community. I wish you success!

low carb beer is a good option if you MUST do alcohol but my husband managed to do induction for two weeks totally without it...and believe me, if he can do it, anyone can! Good luck!

your diet seems alright, but try to add a good sized salad in with that every day (2 cups) and then maybe a handfull of broccoli or something else you like to balance things out a bit. id hold off on the alcohol till you reach your goal but it sounds like your almost there already good luck!

I don't have alot of time for reading as well but I swear I have an ATKINS imprint tatooed on my face every morning from falling asleep reading our BIBLE.... and drooling all over it through the night.

THis is indeed a way of life... you may be able to shed the poundage easilyenough my friend but you will be back at this weight or higher if you treat lowcarbing as a quick fix...dropping the junk is great... its the best thing you could do for yourself...

              hope it goes well...

                I don't care.

It's wonderfully liberating, try it. It probably is worth some pounds right there.

Yeah, I read that about alcohol burning first. And I'm surprised at rum as well, I did read that in some of the Atkins stuff (I'm just busting chops about not having read ANYTHING.)

Usually I'm a Sauvignon Blanc/screwdriver guy, but those are obviously two sweet. I really can't take martinis or anything up straight.

I am going to this a Music Festival tomorrow with about 30 people so a few pops would be nice.

Low carb beer, huh? what's the deal with that?

Salads, thanks, that's constructive. I guess with a little non-sweet dressing. o&v or whatever?

One night of drinking WILL likely cause you a 3-5 pound gain. Been there, done that, more than once. It takes a whole week (5-7 days) to get back where you were, and it just isn't worth it. I even drank bacardi and diet the one night, didn't matter. Now in 5 weeks, I have only lost 12 pounds and have been stalled for 2 of the weeks due to my experiment.

Could you be pregnant? One night of drinking is the number one cause of pregnancy.

                            Welcome!
As I am frightened by your avatar and you are likely to be frightened by mine lol....and we are close in age and both targeting 188 el-bees, here is my suggestion if you can get it at the fest or bring it in:
                            Vodka martini with olives:
Calories in a Vodka Martini using 3 fluid ounces of vodka, splash of dry vermouth and a green olive - About 210 calories and less than one carb gram.
To drop the fractional carb, drop the vermouth, and then it's rocket fuel though.
Either way, basically zero carbs and zero hangover if you are able to avoid mixing it with Ultra beer that night. Don't want to drink and feel like it, have a few olives as a snack. I had Ultra at a music fest a few weeks ago. I find the Ultra can be a slippery slope...if one how 'bout several - with friends drinking, and at a couple carbs each there goes the carb budget, or heck why not a Guinness others are having??
Having said all that, by the book is best.
                            I'm headed to the gym.

Actually, it isn't the alcohol that I worry about. It's the fact that after a couple glasses of wine or mixed drinks I would be more likely to say the h*** with the diet for tonight.
