  • Just starting and optimistic!

    Hello, all!

I'm new to Atkins...though not new to dieting attempts. I wasn't quite a "yo-yo" dieter (my attempts usually lasted about a year). However, very little seemed to work. I've been overweight ever since I was a young child. My family is on the larger side as well, but my size is not something I've ever been able to accept as just a fact of life. I was so frustrated back then that I became bulimic for my first year-and-a-half in college, dropping 60 pounds but putting myself in the hospital in the process. I recovered, and even though I put the weight back on, I'm much happier with myself and in a better place emotionally. Heh, ready to take care of my body the "right" way, y'know?

Two years ago, my aunt started Atkins. I came to visit after she'd been on it for 6 months, and wow! She looked great--much healthier and happier than I had last seen her.

I figure I'll give things a shot myself. It's been a little tough getting started these two weeks (especially with my roommate keeping things I shouldn't eat everywhere around the kitchen). However, I'm almost 10 lbs. down now, and it gets easier to stick with each day.

I went to this site looking for recipes (I've been craving dessert like crazy this week...), and I thought it couldn't hurt to get some insight from folks who are a little more experienced with the program.

Nice to meet you all, and have a nice day!

    Re: Just starting and optimistic!

Since you are new to the game, I will give you some unasked for advice... if you can stay away from the sweets for a month, you will get away from the desire for them and less sweet things will satisfy that sweet tooth. However, having said that, there are some very good recipes in the recipe forum. On induction it is tough to come up with something legal since you are only allowed three artificial sweeteners a day.

In those early weeks, I satisfy a sweet tooth with a diet rootbeer+ dash vanilla+ tablespoon of cream (tastes like a rootbeer float) or a tablespoon or so of cream cheese with a tiny dash of vanilla and some splenda. Kind of like a bite of cheesecake. Since you aren't making more than one serving it keeps you less likely to overindulge.

Good for you for doing something about it now. Best wishes for continued success.

      Hi, terbear

I want to second what Jill said... try to reign in that sweet tooth as much as possible. And when you do make something, always try to make a single serving of it. I am notorious for not being able to leave anything behind.

I'm glad that you've found us here! Here are a few links to get you started... the last one is to a website that a lot of us use for recipes. Stick close to the board, and post often. Good luck!

        Re: Just starting and optimistic!

Thank you both so much for the advice! Heh, and sorry for the late reply....crazy work schedule.

I tried the serving-at-a-time of "cheesecake", and it worked out great. I've been mostly missing fruit (that pretty much made up my previous sweet tooth), but I'm gradually weening off of feeling the need for anything.

        Have a great day!

          Re: Just starting and optimistic!

Hi there I'm new too so thought I'd say hi. I can't offer any expert advice on Atkins as I've still got loads to learn myself. All I'll say is that if you want it badly enough you'll be able to stick to it. Don't look at the big picture, just break it down into 7pound goals. I lost about 35 lbs a couple of years ago and it felt so great when I got there - it's true what they say (albeit corny!)...being thin is much more enjoyable than eating chocolate!!

Keep up the good work and I'll hopefully see you around here and see how you're getting on

Hi Pamela and Terbear, I'm new also, and wanted to say hi. I'm still figuring out how to post and I'm trying to get a weight loss ticker going, but so far it has not shown up in a post. I"ll keep trying! I'm looking forward to chatting with you on the message boards as we get through induction! Jen
