    Another newbie

    Hi all,

My name is Carly and I just started on Atkins today. I just had a total thyroidectomy in June and have suddenly started gaining weight for no reason..added to weight I had already gained prior to that due to thyroid issues. I am committed to doing whatever I can not to let this situation "balloon" ...no pun intended, so I really hope I see some results. I have been very discouraged from everything I have read on the internet about people not being able to lose weight after this type of surgery.

Thanks..and sorry so long to reply. Today is my last day of the 2 week induction and I've lost 10 lbs. I have no idea if that is good but I'm just excited that I apparently can lose despite having my thyroid out. (guess the meds are working). Now I need to figure out if I should extend the induction another couple of weeks. I only stalled out once for a couple of days due to too much cheese.

Atkins says you should lose between 5 and 10% of the total you want to lose in the first two weeks of induction. Closer to the 10% mark would mean you have low metabloic resistance, and should probably add in some more veggies....

Thanks, I'll remember that. I'm not too fond of veggies but have been trying. I have to take calcium in the form of tums 6 times a day and I've been taking the sugarfree ones which have aspartame...I hate it but I have to take it for health reasons due to a low calcium level in my blood. Most of the swallow type pills give me indigestion. I dont know if the aspartame is hurting me at this point but I am still in moderately heavy ketosis.

Re: calcium. NOW brand puts out a powder....calcium carbonate. A tsp a day is 120% RDA. I mix mine into coffee, flax crackers, almond brownies, etc. Much tastier than tums and no aspartame
