  • yet another introduction

I'm a almost 40 spoiled rotten mother of four. My oldest is 18 and getting married in june and my youngest is 13.

Anyway, my huband and I started atkins last friday. Which means today is the beginging of our 5th day. And we both have big sugar addictions. So far I'm doing okay. Or at least I do till I get to the store. Wow! now there's the challenge all the different food I see that I wasn't thinking about is right in front of me and all I want to do is buy all of it. Haven't so far. I keep thinking about the reward of new clothes eventually. So any tips on making it through the store would be great. Keep in mind I have 3 teenagers living at home. And they want normal food for there upcoming school lunches.

My biggest worry at the moment is getting through my oldest son's birthday. It's this friday. Which means Cake and ice cream in the house. Plus tradition says he can choose where we eat for dinner. I hope I have the strength to make it through his big day and the all you can eat pizza place I'm sure we will be going to for his birthday.

I am a choco-junky as well. Big one.
You do have some dilemmas there for sure. Atkins recommend shopping in the periphery where all the whole stuff is. Veggies, meat, daily. But I can see that with kids you need to walk through some isles. When I cook for my non Atkins family, it is pretty much Atkins stuff - sometimes with some rice, potatoes added for them mind you. But I do not really make two sets of meals.

I recommend eating before you go to the store - that makes it easier to keep away from those illegal things. And if you have something that motivates you like a picture bring it to remind yourself why you are doing this. Wear pants one size too small perhaps?

For the birthday... most places - even pizza places, will have some salads. If worse comes to worse you can eat pizza toppings - messy but works. Again I recommend eating something before leaving so you have some control.

As for the cake? Does you family like cheesecake? There are some legal (and very yummy) cheese cake that you can make. Cheese cake is my personal way to avoid those potential celebration disasters.

Good luck. I look forward to hearing more about you and your husbands journey to healthy.

      Hi chocojunky! Love your handle
While it's best to avoid temptation where you can, the reality is that you will be LIVING with this way of eating for many years to come....so, you may as well learn to deal with those special occassions and holiday.....seems they are always around the corner! Eating before going out is a great suggestion. As for birthday cake.....yikes..... the best you can do is have something different available for you.
Unless you'd like to do something unusual....like everyone gets individual mini-cakes....then you won't be the odd man out.
      Good luck!
