    Re: Starting today

Hey there Maisy...welcome! Glad you joined us here at ADBB.

You'll certainly be able to have strawberries and cream quite soon. You need to do the two weeks of induction and then start to climb the OWL (ongoing weight loss) rungs. When you get to the berries rung, you can have strawberries.

Be careful of your veggy quantities in induction (3 cups total... i.e. either 2 cups salad and 1 cup other veggies; or: 3 cups salad - preferably more nutrient dense than just lettuce). Most of your 20 g of carbs should come from veggies in induction.

Read the stickies in the Induction forum and some of the FAQs. They'll give you a basis to work from. But the most important read is, of course, DANDR (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution). You'll want the 2002 edition which is the one this board goes by as it was the last one that Dr A wrote in its entirety before his death. Any subsequent versions have been "interfered" with by other people.

Post lots and keep us updated. We're here for you.
    Before and after:

Start 10 Jan 2005. Maintenance since Aug. 2005.

        Re: Starting today

        Hi there,

I am also new to the board, so welcome!! I must say that I've gotten TONS of motivation just from reading others' postings here and I hope that you will to.

You definitely should begin reading the book-- if you do, almost all of your initial questions will be answered right away. Until you get the book, you should go to the official Atkins website and print off their "INDUCTION LIST ACEPTABLE FOODS" and make your daily meal plans with that. My best advise is to READ ALL LABELS of everything you consume. During induction, you're keeping your carb. gram intake below 20 per day, but as the previous poster noted, most of these carbs. should come from fresh veggies. Have scrambled eggs & cheese for breakfast, a salad with grilled chicken or other lean meat for lunch, and then something like steak & brocoli for dinner. If you search for them, you will be able to find THOUSANDS of wonderful, quick & easy recipes for snacks, meals & desserts. Just be careful to watch labels and count your carbs. and you should do great!

Also, I hope you've already been told about the "Induction Fog" that you may feel on the first day or two. That is completely normal and will pass quickly if you're eating right. After the "fog" has passed, you will feel better than ever!

        GOOD LUCK!

          Re: Starting today

Good Luck it really is an easy diet once you know what you can and can't eat. I'm on the first day of week two and I lost 10 pounds last week. I was thrilled. Best thing to do is read your labels and don't eat anything with carbs, except veggies. I love fish at lunch and a grilled chicken salad at dinner. The hardest thing is not eating again after dinner but it gets easier each day.

            Welcome maiseygrace-

For when you get to the berries rung, 'happyinlife' shared this under a post I did on (avoiding) ice cream birthday cake:
            -----------------------------------------
I use a scoop of Cookies n Cream pure protein powder (sold in publix) 2 carbs per scoop. I understand that Designer protein powder is very good too.

I also use the vanilla protein powder flavor and add 4 strawberries or 1/4 cup of blueberries with about 1/4 cup of cream, tsp splenda, 3 ice cubs and about 1/4 to 1/3 cup water. You will want to play around with it to
            your preference.

            -----------------------------------------

FYI I have found not eating after dinner to be easy after several weeks of changing habits. I think it's from working out before or after dinner and having a light dinner.

                    Re: Starting today

Hi maisy I think it is great that you are committing yourself to your health again! It would be so easy to just give up and say "nothing works, I just can't keep the weight off so why bother?" But that's a lie. You can do this. One great thing is that by the time you get through all the rungs, you will exactly what you can eat, what you can't eat, and what needs to be limited, and thats knowledge that will be with you for the rest of your life.
At this point I would say that the most important thing is - don't make yourself miserable. If you are unhappy with your diet it could lead to disaster. If you can starve your sweet tooth and make it go away, by all means do it!
But if you can't, remember that there are alternatives. You are allowed the equivalent of 3 packets of sweetener a day even on induction. Make the most of it. And if you want to get your sweeteners in without carbs, give liquid splenda a chance. I ordered some from sweetzfree.com and it is great.
Sugarfree jello is my vice, as well as the 'cream cheese clouds' recipe I found on here.

                        Re: Starting today

Must have coffee w/ cream! Atkins says you can have 2-3 tablespoons of heavy or light cream a day. I use 'heavy whipping cream' because it takes less to get the desired creaminess, thus less carbs involved. I also drink half-caff, trying to work down to decaf but I like my caffeine! However, it does make me feel dehydrated if I drink too much...

                        Atkins says this about caffeine:
"Caffeine can cause cravings or blood sugar spikes with some people. If you’re one of them, you should drink only decaffeinated beverages. If you don’t have a problem with caffeine, you may drink one or two caffeinated beverages a day, because evolving research indicates there may actually be health benefits to a limited amount of caffeine. However, if you have a true caffeine addiction, it will be best to break it during Induction, because any food addiction can cause problems if it isn’t taken care of. Once you’ve broken the addiction and moved on to OWL, you can carefully try adding caffeinated beverages back into your food intake, as long as it doesn’t trigger the addiction again."

                        Hope that helps!

maisy - i love sweets to and i use the chocolate cool whip for that. its only got 2 carbs and 2 sugars so when I absolutely have to have something, the cool whip hits the spot and i have had no problem with losing.

Hi, maisy grace, food fun and Danielle Way to go, Diamonds! Check in here often ... it really helps you to stay on point. It's surprising where you find support, though ... went out to breakfast this morning and told the waitress I was ordering a la carte (eggs and sausage) 'cos I was on Atkins ... she got all excited and told me she had lost a ton of weight doing the same (and she was sleek as a gazelle!); she brought me heavy cream for my coffee after seeing the half 'n half in the creamer bowl Lots of smiles and high fives all around ... it was great! Moral support is a beautiful thing
