Hello Everyone,
My name is Sunny. I just got out of the hospital on Sunday after a 10 day bout of pancreatitis and ketoacidosis. Turns out my BS was over 550 when I went in with pain. I thought I had food poisoning, but it was the pancreatitis. Anyway, I am home now.
I was sent home taking lantis shots of insulin at night and humolog before each meal and my BS is still above 200. My doctor/dietician is in full support of low carb because the fewer carbs I put in my body, the less insulin I will have to take. I am what they are calling a Type 1.5 diabetic now. I was told once the sugars are under control and I can maintain them I can try just taking pills instead of shots (goal of 3-6 months on that).
I am 33-years-old, engaged to a wonderful man (Jeff) who is fully supportive (his Mom is diabetic) and we have no children. I am a teacher, but I teach from home so I am able to get better while still keeping my job which I am very thankful for each day.
I am not new to Atkins as I lost 40 pounds in three months about four years ago, but fell off the wagon. However, the ADA diet is full of carbs and even the dietician said to try lower-carb (she avoided saying Atkins though and said "South Beach" or "something similar").
Today is the first day so I am very excited. I have good reasons to be here because I know if I let the sugars get too high that my pancreas will kick my rump again (pain like that is not fun) and I will be in the hospital again.
Wish me luck on my journey.
Sunny
