  • aboard the atkins train again...choo choo!

    hi everyone!

    hmmm. where to start?

i'm new to the board, but not new to atkins. i've been on atkins off and on for the most part of three years. during those three years, i managed to lose only 40 lbs.

i had a car wreck in august of last year and shattered my right heel. i had to have reconstructive surgery and was on crutches for 4 whole months. i couldn't cook for myself or anything since i had to hold on to crutches to walk. due to the wreck and the holidays, i managed to gain 20 lbs back.

i went back on induction the first week of january and stuck to it. i had no cheats. i was eating around 20g carbs a day. no nuts, or anything like that. i was in ketosis for 25 days straight and i didn't lose a single ounce. of course, i was extremely discouraged and started cheating once a week. now, i fell off the wagon completely.

friday, march 11th, i'll be going to dr vitkin's weight reduction and control clinic. it's a lowcarb diet center in the south, almost identical to atkins. i'll be paying for support and going to weigh in and get measured regularly. i did the program when i was in high school (years and years ago. doesn't seem like it. i'm getting ooooooold!) and lost 40 lbs very quickly.

at some point during the three years on atkins, i started going to the gym regularly. i'd spend about 2 hours there, 5 days a week, for 3 months. during those 3 months, doing the diet and exercising, i managed to lose not one single pound....or an inch. it seems when i exercise reguarly, i completely stall.

since my foot surgery, i haven't been able to be very active. during the last couple of weeks in december, i began to walk without crutches. now, i'm walking around in regular shoes and not my protective boot. i can be on my foot for about 3 hours straight, and then my ankle swells up and i'm pretty worthless the rest of the day. so, needless to say, i'm unable to do any strenuous exercise.

i'd love some support from ya'll. i'm going to europe, may 7th. i want to lose 20 lbs by then, because #1, i want the extra weight off of my foot, #2, i'll be doing so much walking, it'll be easier 20lbs lighter, and #3, i want to wear my size 15s again. that's probably unreasonable. but, the sooner i get back on atkins, the sooner it'll come off, i hope.

it seems like i've been doing atkins so long, my body has just stopped responding. if i began to increase my carbs to 25g a day with some strawberries and extra broccoli, i'd just stall or even gain! i know atkins is best for my body, but i want it to respond! i feel like if i even tried weight watchers or the like, i'd gain weight.

i guess i just need some positive reinforcement. any tips on getting active on a bum foot? i used to do yoga quite frequently and absolutely loved the way it made my body feel and look. i'm going to start back today. i also can do maybe an hour of dance dance revolution before my foot gives out.

i normally drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day, regardless. should i try to increase that? also, i drink a cup of green tea a day, take flaxseed oil and fish oilsupplements and a carbsmart multivitamin. what other supplements do ya'll recommend?

i'm currently at a size 18 and 215lbs. i'm 5'6" with a very big bone and muscular structure. i'd like to get down to 160-165 for my long-term goal. my mini-goal is to get down to 190-195 and fit into my 15s comfortably again.

sorry if this post got way too long and out of hand! =)

    welcome to the board.

When we are exercising we are morphing our bodies and scale weight isn't the best indicator of what is goping on. we aree burning up out fat masses and building up our muscle masses and our bodies are doing some other things with fluid masses which is why stalls are defined as no pounds nor inches lost for 4 weeks. how many inches did you lose in that 25 dayds?

Your metabolism has been effected by the medications you took and your slowing down of your body the new moving around more and exercising will assist you in losing your body storage fat as it increases your metabolic rate. Are you off all neds now too?

    Happy low carbing

      thanks for your reply.

during january when i went on induction once again and when i was in ketosis for most of the month, i didn't lose any inches that i could tell. my clothes still fit the same. when i go to the clinic friday, i'll actually be measured. and then i can have numbers that i can go by.

i stopped taking pain medications 3 weeks after i had my reconstructive surgery. so, that'd be around the end of september. i have a high pain tolerance, so i didn't really need them after the first week. plus, i didn't want to get addicted. so, i've been off the meds for 5+ months.

i'm not moving around to the point where i need to be. my foot just can't handle a lot just yet. i just wish i could get on a treadmill and jog like i used to. but, according to the doctor, i'll never be able to jog or run again.

this time around on atkins, i hope it's going to be different. i hope i lose much more quickly and won't get discouraged when i don't.

Hi there :wave Welcome to ha

I'm glad you found this board. We have all had some form of temporary success with 'Diet' plans most of our lives. But the end result was to gain it all back plus some.
I was my own enemy when it came to dieting. That is until I read DANDR and combined it with the awesome support this board has to offer.
Atkin's is a wonderful way of life. But when you put it together with the support this board has to offer, it ROCKS!
I think you will be ecstatically happy that you found us. I attribute nearly all of my success so far to ha

The folks here are the most knowledgeable of any support system I have ever seen. Just ask if you have any questions.
Go over the FAQ's and even try posting your Menu in the 'Review my menu' thread. You may have some hidden issues that will surprise you.
Also we have so many who are challenged when it comes to exercise. I was one as well. I started my exercise by little leg lifts on the side of my bed. Check out all the different exercise tips and challenge threads we have. Lots of wonderful advice over there.

You can do this. We can all help each other. Together, we can make a difference.

I wish you all the best this time around.

        Hugs,Tammy
