  • Second Time Around!

    Hi everyone!

I am a 52 year old woman and this is my second time with Atkins; the first time I lost around 20 pounds but unfortunately succumbed to carb cravings and couldn't get back on track. At that time, South Beach was gearing up, and I also tried that approach, recognizing the similarity with Atkins. Needless to say, the carbs got the best of me, and it is only until recently, when I realized that I had gained 80 pounds, that I really needed to shape up (literally!).

After reading the recent research in in the New England Journal of Medicine, and also re-reading my old Atkins books, I determined this is clearly the best way to go.

So, I am into my third week of induction; so far so good; I lost 9 pounds the first week, but haven't weighed since. I can, however, see a difference in my clothes, which is exciting.

I am also drinking a lot of water (over 8 glasses; no more soda!) and exercising on the elliptical, and walking daily.

I do have a reason for this strong drive: in mid-October, my friend and I are going to London and Scotland, so I really need to get back into shape!

I certainly appreciate any support and encouragement from all of you, and would like to know more about how one gets an "Atkins Buddy"!

Looking forward to exchanging stories and inspiration!

        Re: Second Time Around!

Thanks Trisha 001 and Chicklady! I was looking at both of your stats; very impressive! You are an inspiration to me! I am 5' 7" and was at my highest weight I have ever been (234); as I mentioned before, I weighed once after one week of induction and had lost 9 pounds. Tomorrow will mark 3 weeks on induction and I think I will weigh again. I noticed that over the past couple of days, I have been having a significant increase in carb cravings, but so far have been able to resist the urge. I gather this is normal from time to time, but it is challenging. Has anyone tried the 0 carb noodles that are advertised on top of this board?? Can you eat them during Induction?

          Re: Second Time Around!

I've had the "miracle noodle"....it has the texture of a rubber band, otherwise, after you get rid of the fishy smell, it's unoffensive In the grocery store, you will find "House foods" brand Shritake noodles...the same as the miracle noodle except the texture is softened (still a bit chewy)with tofu (which Dr A called soy cheese) which is allowed on induction. I've done a ton of things with those noodles. They will never be like "real" pasta, but they are a great side.

BTW, I hope you are measuring as well as weighing....it's much more reliable than the scale

I must confess I am not measuring; but of you are right, I really should be doing that; I did, however, bravely get on the scales this morning and discovered that on my 3rd week of induction I have lost 15 pounds; not bad!

So how is your progress going?

                Re: Second Time Around!

I'm a snail! The first time I did Atkins, I lost 100 pounds in 8 months. The second time, I lost 66 pounds in 9 months. This WILL be my final time, as despite my efforts to be brain-dead, it's finally sunk in that this WOE is for LIFE! That said, I'm losing about 5-6 pounds a month. But i admit, I want for nothing. I eat when I'm hungry. I've developed, and still like to play with, recipes that satisfy those moods that hit once a month and to boot, my TOM is essentially cramp free. Never got that kind of satisfaction from any other diet.....and I'm pretty sure I've tried most of 'em!

                      Re: Second Time Around!

So you are losing approximately 5-6 pounds per month? How much exercise do you get/what kind?? I was actually hoping that before my trip to London on 10/16, I would dip below 200 (I am now currently 217). Am I being unrealistic?

Tonight was a real struggle for me; I went to my father-in-law's birthday party and they were eating pasta and cake, etc. I stayed with roast chicken, broccoli and caesar salad, but I had (and still do have some intense carb cravings). So I went out to get a burger at a fast food restaurant, had some olives, which helped a little, but I am still struggling tonight for some reason.

So tell me, what are the kinds of foods you eat typically in a day? What kinds of snacks do you eat on Induction? How much cream can you actually have?

I also note that Momtomany1 sent a note below yours saying to "meet over there". I guess I am not sure how to work posting messages, am I doing it wrong?

Thanks again for your support and sharing your story, it really helps!

Hi, again! I left you a link to the forum here called Second Time Around Club. We have a lot of fun, we are all folks who have done this once before.. or 30! But really want to get to it again!

You are posting fine, it is just an invitation! Here is the link again..

Second Time Around Club - Atkins Diet

In the other post I had it embedded in the word 'here.'

                        Typical induction day for me

2 egg omelette with mushrooms and pico de gallo.. no cheese or only a tiny bit. (Nothing wrong with cheese, I just go light on it.) 2 slices bacon or 1 sausage patty.

Mixed green salad with 4 cherry tomatoes, halved. One hamburger patty with a little mayo and a pickle slice or two.

Two baked chicken legs, with skin, 1/2 cup broccoli. (Can't overdo the broccoli, I already had tomatoes and pico, so I have had 1/2 'other' veggies already.)

I save cheese for snacks, string cheese mozzarella, 1 oz. If I need another snack during the day it is usually a boiled egg, halved, with a dollop of mayo, or go 'whole hog' and make deviled eggs.

Once I hit OWL, I was happy to be able to eat more celery with cream cheese for snacks. I also use onions in cooking in OWL.

Other dinner entrees are salmon patties with flax instead of cornmeal, steak, or corned beef and cabbage (leave the nice reg taties for the family!) or roast beef.. I love to cook yellow squash, or cauliflower.

This will sound crazy.. but radishes sauteed until soft in bacon grease with just a little diced onion is wonderful, turnips too!

There is so much good stuff to eat!

                          Re: Second Time Around!

Thanks for the link; I will check into the Second Time Around Club. If I am replying to you, am I connecting with the Club or just you directly? Just checking to make sure I am posting right!

So it appears, (by the name of the club!) that weight does seem to creep up again? Is it really possible to live by an Atkins-based diet for life? I haven't gotten far enough to look at the maintenance program yet, but will there be a time when we can eat bread or pasta (not low carb products) from time to time without gaining it all back? Or are we banned from sugar, refined carbs forever?

Oh yes, another question, how much exercise do you get/what form? I walk my dog several miles (I try and do that daily); if not I use the elliptical. Is that OK?

                          Thanks for your input!
