  • A Brief History of Dieting

    Hi all,

Yet another newbie to the forum, but not to the diet. My first diet was in 1991 or so when I wanted to "lose a few pounds" to look better for my then boyfriend. I went on a low fat diet and GAINED 35 pounds. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I went from 120 to 155 and was really horrified.

So, then I tried Atkins but pretty much did it without counting carbs, no keto sticks just low carb food and within about 4-5 months, I was down to 115 and felt great. I also ran, swam, biked and roller bladed everyday.

Then, I got out of college and started work and got married. The stress of all those combined plus sitting at a desk all day, shot me back up to 145 or so.

I continued to gain until I was up to 195 and felt really awful about myself. My grandmother bought me a nice new outfit and it wouldn't fit. I was so embarrassed and really depressed. So, I started walking again and went back on low carb in May 1997 and by November 1997, I was at about 170 and ran a marathon.

I continued to lose weight and got back down to around 145 when in May of 1999 I moved to Houston. I started training with a new coach and injured my knee.

Then, I stopped exercising and started consoling myself with food again. I met a co-worker and we started working out together and I started running with a group 3 miles 3 times a week. I was doing Weight Watchers and started at 220 and ended up about 180. In 2002, I became pregnant and kept walking throughout.

When I was 9 months pregnant, I weighed 225. After my son was born, the total shock of the complete life change was overwhelming. Again I consoled myself with food and kept trying to lose weight mostly with Weight Watchers. I could lose a few pounds, but I always ended up so hungry that I couldn't stay on it. Even with exercising, I couldn't lose enough weight. Eventually, my weight climbed to 244. I tried to tell myself to just accept that I would always be fat.

The lowest weight in the past 5 years since my son was born was 214. It's been over 5 years since I've been under 200. I have PCOS and sleep apnea and I really think low carb works well for me.

I've been back on Atkins for almost 2 weeks and I can really tell the difference in my energy level. I didn't do the full induction but have kept my carbs at about 30 because once when I tried Atkins again, the induction flu was so bad I thought I would need to be hospitalized. Now I'm trying it with a slower approach of cutting carbs.

I've lost about 4 pounds. I started this time at 232. I had just come of a few months of Weight Watchers where I went from 232 down to 224 and it just hiked right back up. But, I feel more relaxed on Atkins and I really feel like this time it's going to work. I'm determined to make it work. I really want to be back under 200.

Re: A Brief History of Dieting

Queenbuzz, your story sounds very familiar. I'm glad you've returned to what works for you. I can relate to your story -- though I've never not been significantly overweight as an adult. However, the majority of my morbidly obsese weight came after my kids, not with the pregnancies. (Having 2 kids within 17 months didn't help.) I turned to food as the ONLY way to take time for me, to 'treat' me... when I had no time or energy for anything else.

    May I make one suggestion?

Many people reduce carbs and call it Atkins. If you haven't already, I strongly suggest you read the book -- Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002 edition) -- and do your best to follow it, as written. A lot of people who have been successful on low carb but gain it back end up finding their final success on Atkins, as prescribed. I know what I'm saying because I've tried eating low carb, in moderation... following my own rules. For me (and for many) it just doesn't work for the long term. Dr. Atkins really has this thing figured out, so follow the rules and put his experience and expertise to work for you. (I sound sound like a political ad...)

You're already through the induction period (even though you didn't do full induction) -- might as well hop onto Rung 1 and eat those extra veggies! And then, add foods back into your diet in the right order. This allows you to see what you are sensitive to, what might cause cravings, bloating, etc. That is the key for thriving on this way of eating long term! There are lots of great threads here to help you every step of the way.

I like your attitidue and look forward to reading about your successes. Best of luck to you!
