  • Hello

My name is Brian, I just found this board on day 13 of induction.
Ive read "Atkins for life" and some south beach diet books. I'l be getting the bible today!
Anyways Im doing the plan due to a pre-diabetes condition just diagnosed by my doctor. My triglycerides are high, My cholesterol is also high @269
My doc tried the statin drugs and the side effects almos killed me. I decided to try and eat healthier but that wasnt working, I clearly had to do somthing. Someone told me about atkins and here I am. I started at 209# 38" ,today Im at 195.2 and Im wearing my size 36 relaxed clothes! My goal according to the bmi chart is 160! (who made up this chart?!!) I doubt I can get that low, Im 5'10 and med to large framed. Ive decided to go for 175. Im going to try induction for another week since Ive had no problems with the diet so far.
This plan is hard but Im finding there is life without pizza, beer and bread!

      Hi Brian,
Welcome! Glad it's working for you so far. Discovering life is okay without lots of stuff too.
Have you been to fitday.com? It's really helpful. It won't count your splenda use but it us useful for all else pretty much. Just make up an account and start inputting your foods on the food search line. Adjust quantities, how it was prepared and even create custome foods they will remember for you.

        LOL! The bible

Yeah, those charts are only a guideline. You'll know your goal weight when you reach it. I changed mine a few times, before calling it goal. You've had a fantastic start!
I'm glad that you've found us here, unclesalty! In case you haven't seen it yet, here is a link to a "sticky" that I've put at the top of this forum. It contains some good information to help you along your journey. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...-new-read.html

        Good luck!

          Re: Hello

Nice to see another male on the boards. I'm in a similar situation, doing Atkins for health reasons not just weight loss. I had a lumbar fusion in Nov 2007 and my doctor insists I get down to 170lbs. I too am larged framed and can't imagine myself at the established BMI. But I honestly beleive Atkins can get me there. Good luck. Remember to follow the plan exactally as written for optimal success. It's nto easy to get it right the first time and I'm constantly making corrections.

You can do it. Have you considered joining some challenges?

            Re: Hello

Thanks for the welcome! Ill be checking out fitday, Im gonna need some menu ideas. My biggest problem is I dont eat many veggies and I dont really care for mayo so my diet is really limited. Ive read that the diet
'changes your tastebuds" so I will keep trying other veggies and hope for the best. Im loosing about a pound a day at the moment. The only problem I'm having is lack of energy. Im tired all day long, maybe I shouldnt have quit coffee as well. I'll just keep pushing through. Thanks for the support, looks like I found a new home.

              Re: Hello

just try a small salad every day. to start.. if you can get thru a salad you should be ok.. read the list of accepted induction veggies and experiment.. but that helped me at the beginning.. just get thru one salad a day...

you dont HAVE to quit coffee. some do and some dont.. just make sure you dont go over your splenda/cream allowance... Dr A said its the caffiene that can cause cravings in some..

keep up the good work.. glad you found the board.. my 3 essential pieces of advice is this..
              1. come here often
              2. read everything
              3. ask questions

you will find advice, amazing support and encouragement here.. it really helps to see others in your situation.. and what ever problems you face you will find a "been there done that" story from someone... its good not to feel alone

have a great day ... YOU CAN DO IT

                Re: Hello

                Hey, unclesalty

I totally understand the challenges involved with incorporating vegetables. I struggled with it for a while; not a big salad eater. However, I found a few very tasty solutions whereby the vegetable is not the focus.

                1. Sliced Cucumbers drenched in Sugar/Carb Free Greek Salad dressing
                2. Celery stalk with cream cheese
                3. Jicama Cinnamon Fries (Sliced Jicama fried in Olive oil and sprinkled with cinnamon and Splenda)

I basically view veggies as dipping foods. Hope this helps
