  • Started off with a bang.

Hello everyone. My name is Marti. I live in the great state of NC. My hobbies include live music and dancing. I started Atkins 20 days ago and lost 19lbs in 11 days. However I stalled on my 20th day and now I have gained back 7 lbs in the last 3 days. I am very frustrated and at a loss. I am a poster child for this diet. I drink 10-12 glasses of water per day, keep my carb in-take to well under 20 grams, and do 40 minutes of cardio everyday. My ketosis stik's turn purple everyday. I do feel better, and my clothes are loose but I can feel the weight creeping back on and this is distressing to say the least. I do not want to back-track. I have also discontinued my daily diuretic because I thought this might be the problem. I realize that palteau's are a part of dieting, but I have a lot to loss and this is early on. I eat mostly whole foods, and lean meats so I don't believe I am exceeding the carb limit. I also had a hysterectomy over 15 years ago,so PMS is doubtful.
Because I feel so much better I will continue-but I am very concerned about this recent setback. Thank you for any help.

    Hi Marti
    Welcome
How about giving a full menu - sometimes that helps with finding things that may cause this little set back.
Do you take any other meds?

I strongly supect that having been on a diuretic during the beginning of induction, which tends to have a (sometimes dramatic) diuretic effect on its own contributed to your apparent 19 pound loss. The weight you gained back could very well be water you lost too much of, and your body restoring its equillibrium. Just my thoughts, tho - if you were/are prone to bloating and under Doctor's instruction to take diuretics, better check before stopping to make sure that doesn't contribute to problems.

I agree with the water thing... I lost 19 pounds during my first two weeks of induction and then gained 7-8 back even though I was completely cheat free. My body regulated my water and I lost those pounds again after week 5 passed. I have been losing 2.5 pounds on average per week since then. Dont get discouraged, just keep pushing on and you will definitely start seeing great results

Re: Started off with a bang.

Thank you to everyone for your response's. I broke through my plateau this morning and weighed in at 275! I guess I was just over zealous! Who can complain about a 20lb weight loss in 22 days! I decided to stick it out no matter what because I feel so much better. I know there will be up's and downs and I am ready for the ride. All of you are so inspirational and I applaud you for sharing your story!

This is why I am afraid to step on a scale! I don't want to get discouraged when I feel so good. I used to be an every day weigher. Hope your excellent results continue!

I am a serial scale stepper! A bad habit I need to break. Once in the morning is my starting goal then to once a week!

Once we get past the scale-clogging or Riverdance we are better off.
It's good to check sometimes but other things like measurements, how you feel, how you look, and many more factors matter for your long-term benefit.
