  • Introduction

    Hi everyone,

I'm Bjorn and I'm from Malta. I've recently joined this bulletin board but I've been reading it for quite a while now, and I see that a lot of people had some very good results.

I've been on Atkins for almost 3 months now. My starting weight was 94 kg and now Í weigh 80 kg, which I think is a pretty good result. I was living in Germany for a while, but at the moment I came to Malta to visit family and friends. I think its much more difficult to do Atkins in Malta, because everything is loaded with Carbs here. Hehe, thank goodness the Germans love their meat so much and are so health conscious!

Anyway, I did have a general question, but I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask. A lot of people have been telling me to watch out for cholesterol, because I would be eating so much eggs on Atkins (2-3 a day). I wasn't very worried, but now I am thinking of doing a blood test, just to be on the safe side. I am still quite young (I'm 22 years old). I have gone off Atkins for the past week here as I didn't really have much time to stay counting carbs and watching what I eat that much (I was dining out a lot here) Does anyone know if the fact that I was on a high carb diet for this past few days would affect the results? I don't want to do the tests if the results wouldn't be accurate anyway.

By the way, what are your personal experiences with cholesterol and Atkins?

    Regards

    Bjorn

    Re: Introduction

    Hi, Bjorn

    Welcome to ADBB!

First - there are numerous studies out there confirming the fact that eggs are not the horror that some people thought they were. They are, in fact, quite good for you. Do some research, and you will see.

Secondly, it is my opinion that ingestion of cholesterol is a minor influence on the cholesterol levels in our bodies. It is my personal belief, also, that there is a lot of misinformation out there with regard to cholesterol levels and fat in the diet. If you are interested in extra reading regarding this, I suggest "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. A little warning, though - this book isn't exactly easy reading... a little too scientific for my taste normally, but it is such important information, that I toughed it out. What an eye-opener!

And MOST important - yes, you should have your blood work done as soon as possible. In the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Dr. A strongly suggests having this done, so you can compare your numbers after having been on plan a while. This way, you can watch the improvements happen - very motivating! Also, it can make you aware of any problems you may already have (PRIOR to this way of eating). Thay way, you know that the problems existed before doing Atkins, and is not because of doing Atkins.

And make sure to check out this link, if you haven't seen it yet. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...-new-read.html

    Good Luck!

        Re: Introduction

        Hi,

Thanks for the information. I will certainly buy that book and will try to read it. It seems to be very interesting from the reviews I read.

Tomorrow I'm going to go get my bloodwork done. Hopefully all turns out well.

        Thanks again
        Regards
