  • Another with over 100 to lose....

    Hello Lovely People,

Here's my little story: I'm 48 year-old Goddess-Babe, trapped inside a refrigerator-box for a body. I started at 285, (maybe more) and have 160 as my goal weight. I'll re-evaluate at 170 and see if I need to start the tapering off thing then.

I spent six years going downhill with trauma-induced hip-arthritis, (fell off some steps, lol)and by the time I was able to get an operation, I was a crippled cane-user, just months away from a hover-round or wheelchair. I had to stop working, and got fatter and fatter fast. Although it must be said that I've been overweight since '91, when I became pregnant with my now 16 year-old daughter. After a wonderful recovery from hip resurfacing surgery, during this past year, I have my life back, and feel 40 years younger, and I would jump for joy, if I only could get off the ground.

And with this great second chance at life... I've decided that I'm done being fat too. How great, really, to have had the chance to experience parts of my life in a fat body, and then a crippled body, and then an even fatter body, and then return to my original form. I'm as excited about the process as I am the goal...

I've lost 23 pounds so far. When I first started induction, I must admit I was doing it from what I remembered from reading the book a few years ago (but did nothing) and I was eating nuts for snacks, and an occasional couple of berries. Nor was I weighing my food, and making sure i was getting the right proportions. About 10 days into it, I found the book again, discovered my mistakes, corrected the nut and berry thing, and tried to estimate more accurately. Nonetheless I was losing weight, and fortunately wasn't too far off in my 'guesstimations."

Last week I was able to get a digital food scale and start weighing and measuring food, and also use 'Fitday' online, to track my food. I decided to repeat induction as a learning experience if nothing else, but may stay on extended induction for a while. I'm finding the plan very satisfying, and have already experiencing a decrease in appetite, and almost zero cravings for a while now.

I've been a lifelong Pepsi addict, drinking Pepsi instead of water. And while I changed to primarily diet soda about three years ago, it's feels like a definate win to have ceased drinking those as well. Water is my new best friend.

I do have some rather strong fears about getting thinner, centered on 'what-ifs' regarding having excess skin; especially what will happen to my breasts and belly after. I have let that fear undermine efforts in the past, but not this time. I have to see for myself.

I like this board, as the overall tone seems a bit friendlier that the Atkins-sponsored board, although I have learned a lot there. I like the features of this board, and know I will find the 'search' feature especially useful. Looking forward to chatting with you all, and saying "wow!" alot as we all transform ourselves.

PS My husband and daughter are also doing it and are losing weight as well! I'm doing all the work of learning about this WOE, and magically making their food appear. Kind of a big responsibility, but at least my husband isn't bringing home ice cream and pie anymore.

    Thanks for reading my intro
    Best Regards, Kellen

    Hi, Kellen

Thanks for taking the time to tell us your story. I love your attitude, and I'm sure that you are going to do quite well.

Although it is a natural fear to worry about loose skin, try not to let that thought distract you from your mission. As someone who has lost 90 pounds on a 5' 2.5" body at the age of 48, I can confirm that I have loose skin. And yep, I'll never wear a 2 piece bathing because of my soft tummy... and in certain positions (when I'm doing pilates), I am rather shocked to see some of the other places where loose skin has accumulated. HOWEVER, I am so much happier to be thin (loose skin and all)! It is fairly easy to use clothes to hide our less than perfect aspects, and I'm OK with how I am.

It's fantastic that your family is doing this with you! That makes it so much easier. I have a 12 year old son who would benefit greatly from this way of eating... unfortunately, he is just not interested. Tell your family, for me, how proud I am of them for making the effort. Best wishes to all of you!

I think loose skin is a fair trade for fitting into nice clothes again. I plan on buying some Dr. Rey's Shapewear (as in Dr. 90210 Dr Rey, they sell it every couple months on HSN) when i get closer to my goal weight.

You are so lucky to have your family doing this WOE with you. I bet it makes dinner so much easier when you don't have to cook 2 meals.

I am saving for the skin removal surgery as we speak... but, even if that doesnt happen,, i know i will never be able to pose for playboy (not that i would.. but still) i know that i will never wear a 2 pc bathing suit, however.... feeling good and looking good in clothes... where most of the world sees me... is going to be great ! my husband married me this way and loves me no matter what.. he is the only person besides myself to ever see me .. au natural.. and hes ok with it.. therefore... viva la low carb and i cant wait to walk into a "normal" store and just pick something off the rack and buy it... and know its going to fit

keep up the good work ! YOU CAN DO IT... WE ALL CAN !

Re: Another with over 100 to lose....

Thank-you for the welcome, and encouragement... We have considered taking out an equity loan later-on for his & hers tummy-tucks, and this morning wondering if there was a skin donation bank... we are thinking with the extra vitamin E, and all the pre-emptive lubing we are giving our skin as it shrinks, that our flaps might be prime real estate for a burn victim...

That said, I've heard from some people that the skin will shrink in a couple years, or if the the weightloss is slow, that there isn't any extras at all... we shall see... Seems like weightloss goes pretty fast around here...

And I'm in the same position, Sugarsack. Got a husband who swears he'll love me even if my ta-ta's go flat... but will I be able to deal? Only one way to find out... I must say, I like feeling my neck again. Was starting to look like one of those Boohbahs.

Yes it sure does make it easier with three people willing and motivated to do the plan, but my almost-13 y/o stepdaughter (who doesn't have weight issues) is having to deal with the stuff we give give her, although sometimes we throw a potato on her plate. We do keep bread around for her PBJ sandwiches, and let her get crap sometimes when we are out. (like a popcorn kit at the movies) I made her spaghetti the other night, because she was wishing for it, and because she's been an awfully good sport. Cool thing was, it didn't bother me to make it. It was more like stepping around something spilled on the floor, lol.

My older girl, who IS on Atkins wants to make cookies for open house for her clubs booth. She thinks she can handle it, but asked us if we can. Oh boy. Not looking forward to smelling those cookies!

You all are doing great, and Mitzimarie, (the only one with a pic) you sure look great!

Re: Another with over 100 to lose....

            Hello Kellen,
Welcome to ADBB and to the Atkins woe. I read your story and it reminds me so much of my own journey. I once weighed 374 pounds. I have lost 145 pounds and yes, I have loose skin. I would rather have loose skin than be carrying around those extra 145 pounds. One would never know I have loose skin by looking at me. That's for only hubby and my eyes to see.
My Daughter does this woe with me also. It sure makes meal time convenient. My hubby doesn't have weight issues but pretty much follows this woe with us. Like you with your step daughter, I throw him a potatoe or pasta to go along with what we're having.
My arthritis pain did imrove after losing the weight. It's worse in the winter when it's cold. As long as I keep moving it's not as chronic.
Post often, join some challenges. A great way to meet people and make new friends.
            Again, WELCOME!
I look forward to hearing about your success.

                  Hi Kellen

I joined so I could say HI to you. I am Pat Walter - owner/webmaster of the Surface Hippy Website Surface Hippy a Patient to Patient Guide To Hip Resurfacing

I have your story posted about your hip resurfacing there. I also remember that it was difficult for you to find a surgeon to do your hip resurfacing and you were worried about your weight.

I am so happy everything is going well for you. I am very happy that you are being sucessful in losing some weight.

Acutally, Ted and I have been on the Atkins Diet for almost a month. I lost over 10 pounds already. I gained almost 20 since my hip resurfacing. I am 64 now and it is difficult to lose weight. I was not able to be as active as I wanted because my unoperated hip had bursitis in it. It bothers me if I do too much. So I have one great new hip and one that is still holding me back from being really active.

I also fractured my 5th metatarsal in my left foot 4 months ago and spent 3 months in a cast sitting in my recliner. I started the diet before I had my cast off and immediately started losing weight without doing any extra exercise.

I have really slimmed down even though I have only lost 10 pounds. We will both keep on our diet. We think it is a great way to eat anyways. Drop all those bad carbs from french fries, chips, sweet stuff - etc.

I hope you continue to do well.

                  Just wanted to say HI

Re: Another with over 100 to lose....

PAT!!! How great! Yes, the surgery went well, and Dr. DeSmet took care of it, fat and all. He just put on his goggles and 'went in," lol. I was a hard case. I rather dropped the ball on writing my story for your site, but it's so wonderful, being out of pain and feeling strong again! Wait, you have my story there? Did you just kind of edit some of my posts? Wow, I'll have to check it out!

Lisa (thewriter'scollective) made a post on Surfacehippy discussing her further journey after her surgery to weightloss and health by eating this way, and that just clicked with me, and caused my to start Atkins the next day... With how far I have come since the crippled days of a short year ago, it would be almost a sin not to finish transforming!

I find this Atkins thing just incredible.. as you say, that the weight comes off even if you aren't doing much. Plus I'm not feeling deprived 95% of the time. I do have my sentimental moments for carbs, like this morning, when I made a egg, spinach & cream cheese dish that was always served with cornbread when I ordered it out when I lived in Taos. Felt wistful, but then thought well someday I have some again...

And yes, it kind of amazing how much difference even 10 pounds makes... why don't we notice it when it goes the other way?

How fun that you are here, and best wishes on the weightloss journey!

                    Love Kellen

Re: Another with over 100 to lose....

I will check in with you now and then. I am very busy with my website. I work on it 7 days a week as a full time job.

We are not quite as strict on the diet, but we keep away from the sugar and carbs from the breads, taters, etc. We eat too much melon, but we are still loosing weight. I don't mind if it is a slower loss. We really like the fruit along with the salalds, meat and cheeses. I toss in a Michalob Ultralight now and then when we go out, but just one.

We really haven't given up much. We don't use sugar any more, but a small amount of the substitutes. I find it pretty easy to eat the Atkins way and feel it is really good for us.

I started on it when I read Lisa's post on the Yahoo Group, too. We tried the low fat diet long ago, but this really works better and tastes much better.

I hope you can keep on track and keep loosing. IT is not always easy, but worth the effort. It is helpful since I have my husband eating the same way with me.

                      Good Luck.

                      Pat
