  • Another Atkins Newbie.....Hi I'm Liss from Las Vegas! =)

Hello everyone! My name is Mellissa, but most people call me Liss. I will be 26 years old on October 3rd, and I’m happily married with 2 children. My son, Jacob, is 8. My daughter, Ashlynn, is 4.

We live in Las Vegas Nevada, where I was raised, but we are hoping to be moving out of state within the next two to three years.

I’ve been struggling with my weight in a major way for about 6 years, but I’ve always had a weight problem. Meaning, I was a bit of a chunky child from about 2nd / 3rd grade tell about the age of 14. From 14 to 17 I was a bit on the anorexic side and used meth =( . When I was 17 I married and my son was born, therefore that meant I had to eat and use NO drugs because I had people to live for now….When I met my husband I weighed about 155 pounds, I got married at 175 pounds, by my second anniversary I weighed about 200-210 pounds. When I got pregnant with my daughter (almost 4 years into marriage) I weighed about 260, and after I had my daughter I weighed over 300 pounds. I know, gross hu?!?!

Now I’ve had a lot of “life style” changes. I’ve taken nutrition classes, I’ve learned a lot…. But I’m still fat. Diets I’ve done are: Suzanne Sommers, LA Weight Loss (they just took my money and ran), Weight Watchers (I enjoyed), Cabbage Soup, Fit For Life, Phentramine Pills (that worked, but reminded me too much of speed, so I quit)…just to name a few.

Just a bit of medical background. I do have a low thyroid that is connected with my body making too much insulin. But not enough insulin to make me diabetic. The abundance of insulin that is exposed to my ovaries cause me to have Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease…and that is a bit painful at times. Why am I not on meds to get rid of these you ask? Because I also have a benign tumor on the back of my left lung. Hormones and certain medications will help the tumor grow, and if it grows too much more they will have to remove it. They have not removed it yet because it is behind a rib, and they will have to remove the rib and that is NOT good. Soooooo….blah.

I’m also having surgery on November 6th to do an arthroscopy and proximal tibial osteotomy on my right knee. Ouch! Because of this I can’t work out my legs at this time =( This sucks big because my husband just bought me an elliptical not too long ago that I LOVE using. So if any of you have any suggestions on exercising I can do without bending my right knee that would be awesome!

On September 8th of this year I started a detox deal while I read and researched the Atkins Diet. On September 17th I started the diet at 314 pounds. As of this morning, 4 days into the diet, I weighed in at 307.4 pounds!

I’m sorry that this is turning into a bit of a novel. But I really am very excited to be a new part of your group.

Oh, and I’m 5’10…..So here are my mini goals
    299 pounds – Saying Good-by to the 300’s FOREVER
275 pounds – The least I’ve weighed in the past 2 years
260 pounds – The least I’ve weighed in nearly 5 years
224 pounds – This would be 100 pounds lost
    199 pounds – Saying Good-by to the 200’s FOREVER
175 pounds - Weight I was at when I got married
160 pounds – My ULTIMATE goal weight. Truly I’d like to be at 150, but my doctors feel that 150 pounds would be under weight for my height and build.

My only concern is that the Ketostix say that my levels are only at trace =( So I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but it’s working I think so I’m not complaining =)
    Hugs ~

Hi Liss! Sounds like you have a lot going on! But it also sounds like you have a great attitude. Welcome to the boards. You will find lots of support here, and if you ever have a question, just ask.... someone has been there done that and can help you. You've lost 7 pounds in 4 days! That's fantastic! At that rate I wouldn't be worried about what the ketosticks say. They receive mixed reviews here on the boards. I love mine though. They are motivating. You may be only showing a trace because your body is just now flipping the switch from sugar burn to fat burn. The body stores 2 days worth of glucose and wont start burning fat until the 3rd day. You may also feel pretty sleepy today as your body starts to make that switch. You may also only show a trace of fat burn if you are getting hidden sugars from places like gum or mints.

This diet will be good for your hormones and your insulin problems. You will probably notice changes in your period after about a month on the diet. That's your body trying to figure out where it's supposed to be because it's had estrogen overload for years as well as high testosterone with the PCOS.

Keep on track.... and if you slip up.... get right back on the wagon. Don't think of it like you blew it.... just get right back up on the horse. We're all here in the same boat and want to see you succeed.

    Keep up the great work!

Re: Another Atkins Newbie.....Hi I'm Liss from Las Vegas! =)

Welcome to the Board! I'm in Las Vegas too.

I had a lumbar spinal fusion in Nov 07 and started dieting under my surgeon's instructions. He told me that I needed to go from 260lbs down to 175lbs to ensure a successfully recovery. After six months of low-fat dieting and walking I had lost a mere 10lbs. So on July 29th I started induction and vowed to stay on it unitl I reached 180lbs. Less than two months later, I'm down 33lbs.

Here are some tips that have helped me along the way.

            1. Read the book and follow it religously
            2. Read food ingredient labels for corn syrup, sugar, and dextrose
            3. Try 65% fat 30% protien and %5 carbs in 1,500 cal per day
            4. Get FitDay and log your food and exercise
            5. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily.

            Good luck!

Thank you so much for those great tips! I'm already a really big label reader, so that won't be a problem. I'm totally going to make this work...I know it will. =) Best of luck to you on your recovery, ouch!

Welcome, Liss. One the most important things to do now is to constantly visualize yourself being at the weight you want to be because your mind needs a picture as well as a number to work towards. You seem to have most of the 'know how', now it's a matter of patience and persistance. Good luck! We are here to help!

Re: Another Atkins Newbie.....Hi I'm Liss from Las Vegas! =)

Great intro. Hope all of your health conditions get better. You are on the right track in starting Atkins. Don't worry about those keytone strips. They will come around. You are obviously doing a good job as apparent by the scales, so I wouldn't worry to much about a color on a stick.
While your knee is out of commission so to speak you could focus on abs and upper body. You will have time for the legs later when the knee is all better. Also, has your doctor said it would be okay for you to do some aquatic exercises? Just walking around in a pool will take the pressure off your joints and you will still get a great workout. And if you can swim there is a great upper body workout. We just have a small pool here (14ft diameter) but I get in with the kids sometimes and we get a "whirlpool" going by walking around and around as fast as we can. It is very intense on the body though, not something you should try with a bum knee.

Well, I sure hope you stick around. I'm sure you will find great support here on these boards. I know I sure did.

Thank you Blueberry and Donna! I totally believe in visualization, lol...thank you! =) And I am looking for a gym that isn't too far from home where I can swim. As far as my doctor goes he would be happy if I stayed in bed all day and didn't move my knee at all, but as I have a LIFE, lol, that doesn't work. I have been very very carefull, so it hasn't dislocated in a couple weeks =)...swimming will be my excersize =)

                    Again thank you everyone =)

Wecome girlie Sometimes our body will fight to stay at a weight that it gets comfy at being. Dont get discouraged, My scale loves to go up and down. I figure this is the new wol that im living so eventually I will reach my goal weight, which brings with it my goal size 10/12.

Keep with those mini goals they put everything in perspective. What I have is a big wall calander that I mark each day I stay cheat free. It is a real accomplishment for me to see that big number grow each day. Dont forget to drink your water. I am guilty for substituting a lot diet pepsi's and coffee instead drinking plain h2o. lol Least Im trying! Keep up the great work, and welcome. Cant wait to see your post in the extended induction section.
