  • why isnt atkins working for me!

    hello, everyone, i am actualy new to this. I started of with atkins last year august(end of august 2007) at 210 pounds. i went down to 169 pounds by december, i was not even on a strict atkins diet. I decided to start again last week and this is the 5th day of the 2nd week of induction, i started of at 194 and i am 190. I keep going up and down..but never les than 190..what is going on. I am actualy geeting very fustrated

    I am doing evrything right. I eat protein, i normaly fry my meat egg, etc, i also boil and i also use the oven....i once in a while drink diet coke, and also chew sugar free gum..i also add some broccoli, but not that much everyday.

    My main eating habits would be 4 eggs...fried with cheese(quite a bit of that), tomatoes, onions. I also have one sausage like(italian sausage), shrimps, and maybe bacon(2 or three depending) with broccoli..maybe half a cup

    during the day i might have shrimps, chicken breast(cut into pieces), and italian sausage with broccoli, and i fry that with oil. sometimes i have that for dinner too

    Is there something i am doing wrong, maybe too much oil, too much cheese, or maybe drinking the diet coke and chewing sugar free gum, then again i did all this last year too, so wat is the problem now.

    Before starting this diet i went on fast (just grapes and pure orange juice) for abput 5days and went from 203 to 194.....and then started atkins immediately after.

    please help..what to do???..tanx!

    i would start off by saying that what was may not be what is. our bodies are ever changing and yes, even a year can make a difference of how our bodies react to certain things. that being said, i'll offer these things:

    sugar free gum... are you counting the carbs? best to add 1 for each piece if you're going to chew it.
    diet cokes.... yes, they are on the allowable list [if sweetened with splenda], however, a can of soda is more than one serving so you should be counting carbs accordingly and also these drinks are not to take the place of the 64 oz minimum of H2o you are to drink each day.
    sausages.... might have added sugar and other ingredients that are keeping you from getting best results.
    cheese.......... 3 or 4 oz daily is the limit.
    i think i see that are not being so precise with the measuring. you might want to consider that so you know the "maybe 1/2 cup" is really a 1/2 cup.
    broccoli.... there are so many other veggies to choose from. check your allowable list in your book to see the limits allowed on induction.

      Hello there I'm so sorry you're having a tough time with things right now. I've been an Atkineer for about a year now with great success and I can tell you first hand that many things can prevent you from losing or even gaining weight. May I suggest cutting back on the cheese, s/f gum, and the diet sodas for about a week or so and see what happens. Not everyone can have diet sodas, I drink them no prob but my hubby has problems with them everytime. Too much cheese can cause candida issues among other things, without sounding gross, how are your BM's?? You seem to be eating quite a bit of cheese and not a lot of veggies. The gunk trapped in your colon can add as much as 10 pound to your body weight from many things that I have read. Check your labels closely for hidden sugars too.
      How's your water intake, and are you exercsising? You cannot forget about those two things because they, along with Atkins are the only way you're going to meet your weight loss goals. Do you keep an eating & exercise journal? If not, try doing that to see exactly WHAT you're eating and HOW you're working out.

        Hi~ really, it sounds like it IS working for you. keep in mind, you have just lost 12 pounds, when you include the juice/grape fast. Your body may not be ready to lose more than that, and may be taking a bit to adjust to converting from burning basically PURE glucose, to burning fat. Sounds like you are doing ok weightloss-wise to me.

        That said, it looks like you might need more veggies, and be sure to spread them out through the day. Try using fitday ( FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal ) to enter your weighed/measured foods (especially the cheese) and get a reality about what the proper portions look like, and check your fat/protein/carb ratios. Count the gum, count the diet sodas (try Pepsi ONE: it's made with Splenda)

        From what I've learned, the amount of protein one needs, goes down as weight goes down. protein portions isn't something to worry about in induction, as the main purpose of this time is to keep you satisfied, UN-hungry while you break addictions and convert to ketosis. You may not lose much more during induction, but use this time to learn to use a scale and fitday, and break through the craving cycle.

        Oh yes, WATER: make sure you are drinking about 80 ounces for your current weight. It's super-important to keep the machine running when you are breaking down fat.

        And give the book another read-through! You done it before with Atkins, maybe you just need to tighten it up. Stay with it~ you'll be fine. Only THIS time, try doing the OWL rungs and the tapering off when you get close to goal, to find your optimum carb intake level, so you don't gain it back!

          I agree with the bolded. These sugar in almost everything. Check your book for the chemical names. I need to google this myself because I'm amazed by what has sugar in it. I'm in a challenge with myself to eat only what I can pronounce

            I think one of the mistakes new Atkins people make is doing an all meat version of something they think is Atkins. You need salad veggies and other veggies each and every day. Read DANDR 2002 and make sure you read what Dr. Atkins says about sweeteners and cheese. Drink lots of water, exercise. Atkins induction is as much as learning about the lifestyle as it is about weight loss. The learning will last you a lifetime. Unfortunately without the learning, the weight comes back.
