  • Phentermine with atkins??

HAS ANYONE HEARD OF TAKING PHENTERMINE WHILE DOING ATKINS? MY STEP MOTHER SAID SHE TOOK PHENTERMINE WHILE DOING ATKINS AND IT PREVENTED HER CRAVINGS. SHE LOST 150LBS. IS CURRENTLY 130LBS, SHE WORKS OUT EVERYDAY STILL AND HAS BEEN ON MAINT FOR OVER TWO YEARS WITHOUT THE PHENTERMINE. NOT ONE POUND WEIGHT GAIN. SHE SAID SHE TOOK IT FOR THREE MONTHS. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY COMMENTS ON THIS? I COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING ON IT IN MY ATKINS BOOK.

Why wouldn't you just take L-Glutamine for cravings, instead of a prescription (half of Fen-Phen) weight loss drug?

I DON'T KNOW, I WAS JUST WANTING TO KNOW IF ANYONE TOOK APPETITE SUPPRESSANTS WITH ATKINS. IT APPEARED TO WORK FOR MY STEP MOM, BUT DON'T KNOW IF IT IS CONTRAINDICATED WITH ATKINS? I JUST KNOW EXERCISE MAKES YOU HUNGRY AND IT HAS IN THE PAST MADE ME CRAVE CARBS. WONDER IF THIS WOULD ALLEVIATE THAT?

        Re: Phentermine with atkins??

I have exercised anywhere up to 4 hours a day while on Atkins, and while it makes me hungry, feeding the hunger with low-carb foods makes the cravings go away. After induction, the cravings for carbs should subside.

Atkins was designed to be followed as it's written. It works as an appetite suppressant alone, so you don't need to be taking one. I think you would find that if you stuck to 100% plan, that it would work more effectively than taking any drug to help.

The OTC ones worked less than Atkins as it's written did for me, so did the carb blockers. I think that I let myself have more things off-plan and was more willing to say that it wasn't working for me by wanting these to make it easier for me, but in all actuality, it's really easy and efficient on it's own. I found using OTC pills to be a reasoning I could use to binge on high carb foods ("oh, I missed a dose, it'll be fine tomorrow when I take it again"), and expected everything to be perfect.

Then again, I feel like if you can push yourself to make it through a 100% clean induction, you won't be worrying about these cravings so much afterwards.

          Re: Phentermine with atkins??

I am not having any cravings right now, just worry about when i start running again. When i was thin, i craved carbs after a run. I never have been a carb junkie, never drank cokes, candy, much bread. My weakness was fruit, fruit juices, and sunflower seeds. (addicted) ha! I noticed when i ate bread, i would bloat up and feel horrible so bread products have been off my diet for sometime now. I haven't bought white sugar or used it in over three years. I did use artificial sweetners, stevia, sweet and low. I would exercise and want to sit down and eat a whole watermellon and believe me... I have. Six oranges, plums, a whole bunch of grapes. So the sugar in those were probably just having a hay day with my blood sugar. Although i am known to have super low blood sugar. I remember one time, when i was lowering my carbs, my blood sugar dropped down to 42!!! So far so good this time around. Especially since i have stuck to strict induction. I am one to never cheat. I quit smoking last year cold turkey, and never looked back.... It was hard, but i did it. The weight did come on after that. I think lack of exercise has probably contributed to that. I am going to stay away from phentermine, as i am a nurse, and i don't trust pharma drugs. I know what they can do to you. Although my step mom's weight did just fall off. I will start running next week and keep good carbs around if i crave. Keeping my fingers crossed. I can't complain though, i have lost thirteen pounds in a week. Water weight probably, but i needed to lose water weight as i retain so much since i have gotten overweight. I just keep drinking drinking drinking... That helps i think too. To prevent hunger.

13lbs in a week is very impressive. Eat something high in fat when you walk in the door from your run - it's what I do. That way you don't run around looking for something to eat, and it gives your body something immediate to deal with. You can have fruit and sunflower seeds, just not on induction. I quit smoking cold turkey too. Both times. I found the exercise and being able to keep better control over eating habits helped keep away weight. Anyway, good luck on your journey.

              Re: Phentermine with atkins??

Okay, I'm going to come clean!!

My doctor put me on Phentermine - 30 mg/day - which apparently is a very low dose and he wanted me on that low dose because of the thyroid issues I have. I jumped at the opportunity because I had been having so much difficulty losing weight before when I'd followed the plan by the book - but when you have thyroid issues believe me, the challenges are really compounded and you can be doing just exactly what your neighbour is doing and have totally crappy results, even if you work harder than they do. So when the opportunity arose - no question - I JUMPED ON IT.

The first week I lost 10+ pounds and was feeling invincible. I was having a cold/flu bout right about then and I did notice that the meds seemed to dry me out in my sinuses and I think I appreciated that more than anything else, but at the same time I saw that when I went out to lunch I was overwhelmed by the simple one-egg/cheese scramble plus lean ham and grilled tomatoes plate that I'd ordered. Remarkably I had no desire to even eat half of what was on my plate.

My friend from work (Carla) that I usually eat lunch with was worried for me - she's used to me downing a heaping plate full of chopped up steak, mushrooms, onions & provolone cheese with a side of mayo and tack on a side salad with bleu cheese dressing!

Now, five weeks into being back on progarm, and for the most part taking that pill each day, I have noticed that I no longer feel the drying out/lightening in my sinuses about 45 minutes after I take that capsule. I'm wondering if I've built up an immunity to it?

I have lost nearly 20 pounds in five weeks. How much of that is due to the eating plan vs. the pill?

I really can not say! For me, it's just one more tool that I have in my belt!

Glad to SPILL MY GUTS here ...

                Re: Phentermine with atkins??

I was on Phentermine many years ago and my doctor took me off of it because people die from it. It is prescription SPEED. It is DANGEROUS. It has very bad long term side effects including heart damage. I personally don't think any dose is safe.

I will admit that I felt great on it, but that is what speed makes you feel like. I am not a doctor, but I would highly recommend doing some research before continuing on this drug.

I am only saying this out of concern for peoples health, and that is why we are here right?

Just as a comment. I've seen a lot of people lose 20lbs in 5 weeks with Atkins as written, without the help of anything else...

boladaio - I notice here this is your first post - Welcome to you; albeit an odd thread for an introduction. Why not got to the Spotlight thread and step right in?

.. back to Phentermine. Somewhere between caffeine and amphetamine, the first of which Atkins warns affects some of us adversely so it should be avoided; the second of which is a substance known to cause tolerance as well as being a habit-forming drug... lies Phentermine. When my BMI was around 32, I managed to convince the Doc to let me try it - he agreed if I lost 4 pounds a month. I did, at first, and enjoyed the stimulant as well as appetite suppressant effects, but this did not last more than 3 months, so the Rx was discontinued. Also, it is unlikely a doc would write a scrip for you without both an "obese" BMI and an inability to loose with diet and exercise alone.

                        Re: Phentermine with atkins??

Hey y0u ... thank you for your post - I read it & took it to heart. Until NMF posted her topic (hope it's ok to abbreviate her name that much) I had never even heard of Phentermine. When my doctor prescribed it, I really didn't ask too many questions. It did help me a heap in the first week or two but honestly, since then, I have not felt much 'more', so have been skipping it most days. I've been skipping pills so often that I've built up an arsenal for a "rainy day' ... but again, I'm not feeling the same reaction that I did in my first week, so I can't imagine that rainy day every occuring!

Lyssie ... I've seen those posts too. In the past when I've read them I have to admit that I've always been skeptical, like ... what are they REALLY doing?? But deep down I ws always thinking - I know that for people with normal metabolisms, etc. the "really doing" thing "really" does work!! But, what about ME? My metabolism is in the ditch ... and it seems so unfair that some folks can do the plan and lose pounds with what seems like a simple effort ...

And there are those of us left hanging out there that bust our butts and don't cheat and work the program and are faithful ... only to lose a quarter of a pound or so a week. That is so much work and effort for so little loss!

Don't get me wrong - I DO believe that this is the right way to eat and the proven program that will get a body the best results in the shortest time, BUT ... I totally understand people that have complications TURNING to some outside reinforcements for better results!!

Hey Boladaio ...20 pounds wll be a cinch to work off with this way of life!! I hope you skip around and check out all the forums! You'll be sure to find lots of new freinds that are JUST where you are right now!

Good luck to everyone with the efforts that they are making!
