  • Let me introduce myself...

I've started the Atkins program because, at 60, I don't have the energy I've taken for granted all my life: I'm overweight, overwrought, and out-of-shape! An adjunct at a local college, I take care of my elderly Dad, and have little time or energy left for myself. I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease, and my symptoms include depression, weight gain, and fatigue. I currently weigh 187 pounds, and my goal is to lose at least 50 pounds (I don't know how realistic this is, but I weighed between 130 and 140 pounds most of my adult life). After losing 20 pounds last year on Medifast, I regained it all and then some, eating my way through one stressful situation after another, so a friend recommended the Atkins diet. After two false starts, I've begun the the program again in earnest, and would be grateful if someone could answer two questions (I bought a copy of Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution, but couldn't find a satisfactory answer): Dr. Atkins says that there's no need to limit fats, even implies that the more fat you eat, the better. I assume that one can eat the fats that are normally found in fish, poultry, and eggs, but what about cream and butter? Can someone tell me how much butter and how much heavy cream I should limit myself to daily? I look forward to being part of the online Atkins community, and thank anyone who responds in advance. Hi there and welcome!

If you are doing Induction, I believe you should limit cream to only a serving or so (says my book.. ).

BUTTER, however, eat it up. Remember to eat until you are FULL.

Butter and cream are separate entities all together.

    I hope that helps some!

    Welcome!
    Clever signature ending,

      Hi Tante and welcome.
I too have Hashimotos and take medication to keep it is check. I have never had a problem from it as long as take my thyroid meds. Are you on medication? It is a quite simple disease to deal with as long as you are taking the right amount of medication.
Once ketosis kicks in you will have more energy than you know what to do with. Its a great feeling.
