I'm so happy to have found this forum. I am female and 55 years old. All my life I was slim and even "tiny" - I have a very small bone structure and I'm 5 foot nothing and always weighed around 100 pounds - even after each of my 3 pregnancies I was able to get right back down to "tiny" again. I've always been fairly active and worked out regularly (when I did, but with breaks of months at a time, if that makes sense).. Anyway, about 5 years ago I started to put on weight and at this point - hovering around menopause, I've reached a top weight of 134 pounds. I know that may not sound like a lot to some people but you have to believe me - it's WAY over what I ever dreamed I would weigh and it definitely puts me firmly in the overweight category given my height and build. As the weight came on I kept trying to tell myself that it didn't matter since I'm healthy ... and I just kept buying bigger sizes... My size 4 jeans have long since been given away, and then the size 6, 8, and 10 got put in the back of the closet and at the moment I hover between 12 and 14. My whole life those sizes seemed HUGE when I saw them on the rack. Now I fit into them! It's surreal...
Okay, that's it for whining, because I've turned over a new leaf! Visiting my mother in Florida last week, I saw that she has dropped 20 pounds. She looked great and told me she's been doing the South Beach diet. I looked at it, but it asks you to eat a lot of "low fat" items. My intuition tells me that we are meant to eat food in its whole and natural form, and if something has fat that is because it is meant to, and our body knows what to do with it. (I'm not talking about trans fat - I realize that's unhealthy - I'm talking about food like cheese, milk products, etc - that need processing to remove the fat to make them acceptable to eat on South Beach) Anyway, I started to research, and found the Atkins is similar but seems much better and to make more sense - so here I am. Today I am on day 5, and I weigh 2.5 pounds less than I did the day I started. I am SO motivated to stay on this plan. Oh, and I also joined a gym today (re-joined. I had let my membership lapse for quite a while) and finding this forum was the icing on the cake. (which I'm not eating LOL)
Wow, this got long! If you are still reading, thank you!
One more comment and then I'll stop I promise. About coffee. I REALLY like my one cup of coffee in the morning (the real thing) and then one more cup in the evening (decaf). I have been drinking them since starting the diet, using 1 tbsp of heavy cream each time. I don't use sweetener. In addition I've had a 1 oz. slice of cheddar for a snack in the morning, and 2 tbsp. of sour cream sweetened with splenda as a snack in the afternoon. Does this overdo my quota of dairy for a day during induction?
I do feel as if I'm already shrinking!
Thanks all,
Mor

and to Atkins.
Still, make sure to read food lables carefully for hidden sugars. HFCS(high fructose corn syrup) is a sneaky one. Manufacturers like to sneak that one in alot.
