  • Hello !!! I'm new too.

Hi !!! I'm new to the Atkins board and I'm excited to learn as much as I can from all of you. I'm 40 yrs. old and married. I'am tired of being fat. I was going to post a before picture of myself but after the picture was taken, I just couldn't do it. But I will later when I start seeing results because then I will be proud of myself instead of ashamed. I'am very active / busy all the time. I have three jobs - one full-time and two part-time. So I'm always moving and going. I guess that's where I don't understand how I got this way. I could understand if I was not very active but I guess I got off track somewhere. I started Atkins on Dec. 29th and thought I was doing good. I only had 16 carbs. all day. I was so happy until I forgot and drank a glass of tea. ( Tea is my poison ). Then it was too late. But I'm still proud of myself and today is a new day. So far I've only had 7 carbs and I'm not hungry. Thursday will be the day I begin exercising. I'll let you all know how it's progressing as we go along. I want to loose 50 pounds within the next 4 -5 months. I'm so ready for summer and I want to look good for my husband on our anniversary. Any ideas to help me along would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and looking forward to making some dedicated friends along the way.

Re: Hello !!! I'm new too.

Welcome new woman. Three jobs - my oh my. You ARE busy. Great on starting already. Tea is allowed as long as it is decaf and non sugar. I drink some decaffed green tea once in a while. I hope those pounds will fall off for you.

There are many, many reasons to exercise. Weight loss is not one of them.

I'm not quite sure what you meant by that comment , but I have been reading the book and it talks about starting any type of exercising on the fourth day while on induction. Even though I have three jobs...that seems not to be active enough or maybe just not the right type of activity. I'am on my feet going all day. So, I'm going to start back on my elliptical machine and see how things progress. You are right about the many reasons to exercise, but your comment made no sense when this is a diet forum. My understanding is that diet and exercise are one of the same. They go together. Why waste your time doing Atkins if you don't exercise, at least to some degree. So, I will do what works for me and what I think is best to help me to progress as an individual. I never do anything halfway. It's all or nothing, once my mind is made up. Have a Happy New Year.

new woman 2009, welcome to !

You are off to a great start! Way to go reading the book. I've read it multiple times and refer to it often.

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but on this board we follow the principles Dr. Atkins laid out. One of them is that exercise is "non-negotiable" and does promote weightloss. It has many other benefits as well.

Stay strong, read lots, post often!

Thanks Clogger for your encouragement and kindness. I'll let you know how things are going when my 14 days are done. I do plan to do the induction diet for at least six weeks. But the book says you will know by the end of 14 days how many pounds you are going to loose depending on the make up of your metabolism. So yeah, I'm excited. Today is day 3 and I haven't had any cravings or even started adding snacks. This is great !!!

To be clear, exercise is necessary in any fitness program.

My point should have been that strenuous aerobic exercise with the main goal of weight loss may not be the best route to take. Long, slow, low-impact exercise with an added emphasis on building strength is proving to be the most successful plan.

A stronger you is a more efficient you, exercise is the key to that goal. Trying to lose weight by exercise is similar to a starvation diet mentality. The result is the same whether you exercise more or simply eat less. You are depriving your system the fuel it needs to function. In the long run, it won't work.

Sears recently supported Taubes GCBC* research hypothesis:

Expending more energy than we consume does not lead to long-term weight loss; it leads to hunger.
That was the basis of my initial post. To restate the obvious, exercise has many benefits, long-term weight loss isn't one of them.

Who said anything about that?!!! What is your mal-function?!!!! Hello, have you read the book ?!!!

I'm still not quite sure why you have targeted me, as a new member, to stress your opinion regarding what I do. I understand what you are talking about because I'm not an idiot, by any means. I'm just a little over weight like others who are here. I'm not starving myself nor do I have any plans to. Unlike you, I have a clear mindset of the results I want from this program. When I made the decision to become a member of this website, it was based on what I have been reading among the forum members as well as the book itself. Please do not comment to me anymore. I have made up my mind to do what I feel is needed for me. Please keep your opinions to yourself. I have enough people around me making comments and pointing fingers. That was my purpose in joining here. To make new friends who have the same goals as I do. I felt as though this is where I needed to be to get me through the next six - twelve months. All you have done is launch a verbal attack to everything I have posted within this small area of the forum and found fault with it. Before you graciously give out advice, maybe you should have introduced yourself and been more positive and maybe even described what you have experienced before you took the time to post a comment that is so off the wall ridiculous. I apologize to everyone here who is reading this and thinking this sounds awful. But this is just an example of the personality types that I attract for some unknown reason. I love help and advice as long as it is helpful and not hurtful. This advice from this forum member is not needed. I feel as though I'm doing the same as other members here who have had success with this program which includes changing your eating habits and exercise. I have seen the before and after pictures and I'am blown away with the results each of you have attained. Congrats to all of you and I hope to get to know you all. Thanks for listening.

Let's lean on each other and keep one another accountable so we can both succeed!!

My first goal is to be back in a size 10 by late spring / early summer.........

You got a deal !!! I would love to have you as a friend. Thanks so much !!! Unknowingly, it looks as though we both have the same goal - size 10 by late spring / early summer. I'm not sure how to add you to my friend / contact list, since I'm still learning to navigate around here , but if you are familiar with it, please add me to yours. You can send me private messages anytime so we can keep up with each others progress. That would be so nice to have you as a new friend. Thanks !!!

                          Hi, new woman, and welcome!

This Board has been such a gift ... without it, I would've fallen off the wagon - and stayed off - after a month or two. So check in often! Are you using FitDay or another one of the free online food diaries? Very helpful.

You sound like a very active gal ... I don't know how you do it all! Kudos to you !

This is only to apologize for this misunderstanding. I am sorry for any problems I may have caused. I did not intend my opinions to be taken personally.

Happy New Year. Good luck with your diet.
