I've been on Atkins since 1 Jan 2009 and couldn't be happier with the way things are going.
I'd been trying to lose weight since mid November doing the standard calorie deficit thing, but it wasn't really working for me, I was so hungry all the time that all I could think about was food, I was having trouble staying awake during the day and to make matters worse, it wasn't really working (I think I managed to lose about 2 pounds in 6 weeks despite missing out on all of the regular Christmas treats). Boy was I grumpy!
I had about 35 pounds to lose and I decided I didn't want to spend the next two years (at the rate I was going) obsessing over food. So I did a lot of research on the internet and tried to sort out which claims seemed to me to have some sort of scientific basis (or were at least credible) and those which were completely made up. I stumbled across an article and a lecture given by Gary Taub which turned me onto the idea of low carb dieting and from there I bought a copy of DANDR and began 'doing Atkins'.
I only half expected the diet to work, or at least to be no better than the diet I was already on, and I was really just doing it as an experiment. So you can imagine my shock when I lost 5 pounds in the first three days (actually I was a bit worried because DANDR says it's not safe to lose more than a pound a day, but it seems to have slowed down since then).
So 11 days later and I am already 8 pounds lighter. Both my husband and I can notice the difference and the best part is that I don't spend my whole day thinking about food! I feel as though my general mood and concentration have improved as well (except for the first three days where I had caffeine and sugar withdrawals and a constant headache. I was a monster then).
The only bummer so far came yesterday morning when I worked out that the cheese and ham I've been eating both contain sugar. Grr! I never even thought to check until I read something in a post on the ADBB which got me thinking that I should check, and for that reason I decided to stop lurking and get involved!
So I guess that means that today is really only my second day of induction, luckily I have been in such a good mood lately that I'm only a teensy bit upset about it.
