  • Hello friends

Hello everyone my name is Sean.
I started Atkins on January 1 and therefore I'm 12 days into induction.
I'm 32 years of age and I'm looking to lose in the region of 80 lbs.
An added complication to my story is that I am a quadriplegic following an accident 10 years ago crushing my spinal cord.
The greatly reduced physical activity is really the main reason that I have gained weight.
It's funny that I have come to terms with being in a wheelchair but have never come to terms with getting fat!
I'm finding induction really easy and following it in a very disciplined way and I have to say I'm feeling fantastic.
I do not know if or how much weight I have lost thus far as I cannot jump on conventional scales for obvious reasons and will wait until I go visit my doctors.
To see if I was going in the right direction, yesterday I tested my urine in with a ketostix .
I had hoped to be greatly encouraged by its positive indication of fat burning with a nice purple indicator on the stick.
Unfortunately it was a very pink colour highlighting only the second phase.
Now I know what it feels like to be a woman with a pregnancy test kit praying for a result either way!
Should I be worried with this result? are the sticks very accurate?
I am so determined that this is going to work I refused to be deterred.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and look forward to sharing my progress with you in the future.
    Cheers
    Sean

    Re: Hello friends

    Good morning Sean,

I'm a newbie to the board also having joined just last night. I think you will probably do well with losing weight on Atkins even though your physical activity may be limited. I am over twice your age and am somewhat limited in exercise options because of bone and joint problems. Today completes six weeks on Atkins for me and as of this morning I have lost 14.6 pounds...not too shabby for an old lady like me. Even though I cannot engage in demanding exercises, I deliberately "fidget" when I am sitting around. So even though you are in a wheel chair, get used to "fidgeting" often. Move and wiggle the parts that you can and that will help to burn calories too. Lift weights if you can and keep on keeping on with the eating plan.

Best wishes in your Atkins journey and I look forward to reading of your progress over time.

      Re: Hello friends

if there is even a TRACE on the keto stix you are in ketosis, the hue of the color is less important. If you have a trace, that means your body has switched over to burning fat for energy, and that is where you want to be. The color can change just be drinking a lot of water and diluting it-- i wouldnt worry about how dark the purple is, if it's any shade of pink or purple, you're doing well.
