  • Firefighter Needs some help.

    Hi everyone,

My name is Ben, im 20 years old, and I weigh close to 400 pounds. I hate myself the way I am. I have tried the Atkins diet once before about 5 months ago now, and stuck with it for a month with no cheating (stayed on the induction phase that entire time). I dont know what happened but one day I just stopped. During that month I felt the best I have my entire life, I didnt lose a ton of weight then, but just the way I felt was FANTASTIC. My main motivation is that I am a volunteer firefighter. I love being a firefighter, it is my entire life. Being so overweight, I cant perform some of the functions I should be able to. Im going to need a lot of help. Please Please, any tips, tricks, anything will help. Even just talking would be great. I work as a Emergency Dispatcher overnights (11pm-7am) so if anyone is online and wants to talk that would be great to! AIM is mfdbenji.

    MAIN GOAL- 250 Pounds

MINI GOAL- 1 Month on the Induction with NO cheating

Hi Ben -- glad you've found your way back to this WOE -- you were right when you said you felt better than you've ever felt when you were following the plan before -- thats how we all feel!! You ask for some advise -- here's a little from me.

        1. First and foremost, get the book, if you have the book, read it - it's your reference when you need it.

        2. Keep track of your food daily (most of us use a site called FitDay FitDay Free Calorie Counter and Diet Journal:*Login.) It is very easy to use and besides your food intake you can keep track of your moods, your measurements and it's a great place to jot down how you're feeling each day. Besides keeping track of your food measure yourself the day you start (or a couple days after if you've already started) - if your scale isn't moving, check your measurements, you're probably losing inches!!

        3. Another way to help yourself is to post on the different threads, it's a great way to meet people and to help others also!! There is one section of exercise challenges, you don't have to join a gym, the challenges are set up for everyone to be able to use (http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...challenge.html) - there's stair climbing, staying cheat free is a challenge, drinking water, pushups, lots of different ways to get moving and helping yourself loose weight.

        4. There are so many threads that are so helpful - go read through them and before you know it you'll be meeting people. The more you use this website the more you'll get out of it.

You'll do great, you already know how to get started, it's just a matter of doing it. Good luck!

          Re: Firefighter Needs some help.

Hey Ben welcome aboard. I started out in the same boat less than 5 months ago. I could not run from here to across the room without feeling like death. I am currently down 70 pounds and I ran 4 miles this morning. I did nothing special but follow the plan. I would suggest on this attempt to not to stick to induction for more than the two weeks. OWL is important to RELEARN how to eat; to see what does, and does not work for you. I now eat tacos with low carb tortillas, pasta made with tofu shiritaki noodles, and sandwiches with flax bread. I DO NOT MISS ANYTHING PRE ATKINS. You have to go through OWL to find these things out for yourself. Induction is not Atkins, its like diet boot camp. Also exercise is key. Dr Atkins said himself that if you are not exercising, you are not doing Atkins. Buy the book, read the book, use fit day to track your food, exercise and have fun. Look me up if you ever have any specific questions. Good luck!

Now I have a question, peas have carbs in them. Is this the good kind of carbs im supposed to have? It was still under the 25 carbs for vegetables that you are allowed.

                  Hi Ben,

If by peas you mean this

no, they are not allowed on induction. Here is the list of acceptable foods:

If you are on induction, you should be eating maximum 20 g of net carbohydrates, not 25.

The turkey you ate... something is wrong there. Make sure it has no sugar added or something, because it's not normal to have 6.5 carbs.

You should be eating three cups of veggies every day -- 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup of "other veggies" OR 3 cups of salad veggies. The lists of veggies is in the link above. You should also read the rules of induction:

Good luck with a "no cheating" day tomorrow!
"Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Peas are one of the few veggies that are legumes and higher up on the OWLadder as they are really starchy. The turkey is rotisserie and they might be injecting sugar into it. Check it out.
I don't think your eating enough food. Are your ever hungry?

                        Re: Firefighter Needs some help.

Well it seems that the first day was a total flop due to the Peas. The Turkey I made sure was no sugar added, no carbs in it (checked the label on the box at Hannafords myself).

Thorn, no I wasnt hungry, and ususally never am, I dont know why but thats always been me. It has never stopped me from eating things I shouldnt though, and I would eat tons of it.

Thanks for the support everyone, I know its going to be hard, but once I get going, I know I can do it.

And just an update for today, cheated again (another bite of apple bread, damn that stuff is good) and at first I kept thinking damn, im never going to get this induction down. But then I relaized, if thats the only Carbs i had all day, which it was, then I have already turned a new leaf. Normally my day would be filled with carbs, but my yearning for a healthier lifestyle was able to get me through the day with no cheating. Maybe tommorow will be the day I dont cheat. Whichever day that is, that is the day my ACTUAL induction will start. Call this a warm up exercide right now.
