  • Hey all!

Well, let's see... I'm 29, single mother of two AWESOME boys, full time student (graduate with BS December 09)... I have a part time job, am the environmental chair with my youngest son's PTA... bla bla bla... as you can see I live a crazy action packed life - and I love it!

I went on Atkins for the first time six years ago, just after my youngest son was born. I lost 80 pounds and kept the weight off for 4 years. Then, two years ago I made the decision to quit smoking and during that time I told myself it was ok to eat whatever... fat you can loose - lungs you need right? Well, between the changes my body was going through and the added food I was taking in I quickly started gaining weight. At that point I decided I had to change the way I was eating... that trading one addiction for another wasn't the answer. But no matter how well I ate the weight was just piling on... and QUICK!

I soon realized something wasn't right and by the time I went to the Dr. I had gained 50 pounds in six months!! She ran a battery of tests and realized it was my Thyroid. Well, I immediately went on meds and stopped gaining... thank god! But that was two years ago and even though I've done everything they've told me to do... haven't lost a SINGLE POUND! She finally suggested that I start on this liquid diet... well, forget that the whole idea sounded like torture... it was going to cost me a fortune!! When I declined to start on her plan she told me that my only hope for significant weight loss was gastric bypass. That just pissed me off!

So I got a different Dr. and talked to her about the weight gain. She told me that thyroid weight was some of the hardest weight to take off and also suggested the liquid diet. That still wasn't going to happen so I asked her what she thought about Atkins... that I had done the diet in the past with great success and asked if the diet could interfere with my Thyroid issues at all. She said it was worth a try...

So she ran another battery of test.. liver/kidney functions, blood glucose, cholesterol, etc... and everything looked great - healthy as a horse (a fat horse).

So great... Atkins here I come! It's been two weeks now and I've lost 10 pounds! YEAH! It's definitely harder this time than I remember it being in the past... of course my schedule is a TON crazier than it was then.

I will be taking a study abroad trip to Europe with school this summer and my goal right now is to loose a minimum of 50 pounds before I leave in June. I've decided that I am not going to torture myself while I'm there... I want to try ALL the foods they have, but once I get back... it's back to Atkins. I want to loose a total of 100 pounds before I graduate in December. I just can't handle the idea of trying to enter the workforce looking like I do and FEELING like I do about myself.

    Well, wish me luck!

I have a thyroid issue too. Hypo. I am glad you had yours diagnosed. Getting on those meds were kind of wonderful. Energy again. Anyways you can still lose plenty. So good luck.

Yes... the meds were really refreshing. I had no idea what was happening to my body! I just thought it was all from giving up smoking after 14 years... who knew!

They've "pushed" my meds now till she says I'm almost borderline HYPERthyroid... and it still hasn't taken away all the symptoms. She keeps assuring me to "give it time"... [sigh] But I am doing WAY better than I was without the meds so I don't complain too much.
