  • Brand New; On Day 7

    Hi, all!

I'm doing Atkins for the first time. I've tried other methods of weight loss, but none have seemed to work for me. I've been overweight since I was about 12, and it's only gotten worse as I've gotten older. However, my doctor recently told me that I should look into trying a gluten-free diet because she thinks I have an intolerance. I was always a bit skeptical of this diet, but figured, "Hey, why not? It naturally reduces my gluten intake, thanks to the lack of carbs, and I haven't tried this one yet, so what've I got to lose (besides weight)?"

I'm on day 7 of induction. I'm proud to have made it the last 6 days without cheating once (though days 3 and 4 were pretty rough with the sugar cravings, headaches, and dizziness!). But it was sure worth it! I lost 10 pounds in those 6 days. And I haven't even started exercising yet! (I was waiting for the Atkins "flu" to flush ot of my system.)

I keep track of all my diet "stuff" at SparkPeople. I get to see my daily carb count there (which has been 14-16, mostly, but yesterday and today, I've cut back to about 5 to see how that does for me), and I keep a daily blog there to document my progress.

So, I'm pretty gung-ho about this. I have another 138 pounds to go before I reach my goal (135 lb; no set goal date), so I'll be on induction for quite some time. Glad to be here, and can't wait to start being active here on the boards!

Welcome, Evalyora! Congratulations on the 10 pound loss!!!

You should be so proud of yourself! It sounds like you are committed to doing this way of eating right.

Do make sure you are getting the recommended amount of vegetables in. The veggies are an integral part of the plan.

Also, be sure to check out the recipe section of this site, and also Linda's Low Carb Recipes. It will keep you from getting bored with your menu and keep this Way of Eating satisfying and fun!

Welcome to the board, Evalyora! Congrats on your loss!

Do you have the 2002 version of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution? It's the one we go by on the board and it's essential reading to make sure you are doing the diet the way Dr. Atkins intended. It's vital that you get all the veggies in, and skimping on them won't make you lose faster and might well constipate you. I wouldn't want to see you give up because you don't feel well or get bored with such limited choices. It will help you to read the stickies in the Main forum and the Atkins Diet Phases forum. Good luck to you and I'm glad you found us

Re: Brand New; On Day 7

Thanks for the welcomes, Sunny and Aka!

Aka, I do have the 2002 version. It's what I've been going by. However, I've been doing a couple of things wrong so far:

        1. Not enough veggies, as you said. I'm going to start trying to get in 2 salads a day. (I pretty much despise the other veggies on the "3rd cup" list, so I'll either be substituting it with another salad or forgoing it entirely. I know, I know -- not the letter of the law! :P)

        2. I haven't been exercising. Last week, I was pretty much knocked out due to the Atkins "flu," and this week, my little red friend has come a-knockin'. I'll be hopping on the elliptical by the end of this week; that should get me more significant results, right?

On the plus side, I haven't seen a single day thus far in which I haven't lost SOMETHING. The weight loss has been all over the place, fluxuating between 4 pounds in a day to 0.4 pounds. I'm not discouraged yet! I just need to be eating more greens and getting back into the routine of exercising daily, and I'm sure I'll see steadier progress.

        Thanks for the encouragement!
