  • Hello All!

    Hey all,
    New to the forum.

Figured I'd tell you all a little about me..

    22 y/o Male college student

I've decided I need to lose a bit of weight. College has been rough on me. I was around 170lbs or so when I graduated high school. . But over the past few years my weight has creeped up do to horrible eating habits. Currently 235 lb

    Such as
    1. dorms freshman year- buffet 24/7
    2. little caesars $5 pizzas/ frozen pizzas / and other bad food
    3. I eat when I'm stressed or bored <--probably my biggest issue

I'm fairly active, I like mountain biking among other things. I just eat too much/ wrong stuff and need to work on it. What prompted this was I was chatting with an old friend from high school online, I turned my webcam on, and I quote her "omg, what happened"

    thanks......

So yeah, between that and me wanting to go mountain biking out west this summer, I've decided to work on dropping a few pounds. As well as getting into shape for summer. I'm currently at 235 and a BMI of 31. My goal is to be at 200 by July 1 and 180 by Sept 1st. Hopefully get my BMI down to around 21-22 by September as well.

I've been reading up on the atkins diet and plan on starting induction tomorrow. Along with trying to get out on my mountain bike once the snow melts, but in the mean time I'll be working on the excercise bike and some minor strength training.

I think my biggest problem will be the temptation to cheat, I have tried to diet in the past and have failed due to this, but I think the atkins diet fits my tastes better.

    Any support would be appreciated,

    Cheers,

    ArcticSP

    Re: Hello All!

    Welcome, ArcticSP!

Glad you are reading up on the book so you have a solid foundation for your new way of eating.

The temptation to cheat will always be there... and it's probably worse at college than most places.

But if you can keep your goal and priorities firmly in mind, it will help you through the tough times.

Be sure to keep legal snacks handy for when those times hit.

And the very best of luck to you.

Welcome arctic. I can definitely relate to your situation. Same thing happened to me in college, and I ended up weighing the same as you. It sounds like Atkins will be perfect for you as it was/is for me. You're reading the book, which is the best advice I can give. The other piece of encouragement I can offer is that while on Atkins, I am really not hungry anywhere near as much as I was before. Sure, there are times I am mildly hungry and will eat, but there are no ravenous cravings.

Actually, as I think about it, one more thought: since you're in college, chicken wings might be your new best friend (unbreaded). They're easy to get in college, are low-carb, and you can eat them while everyone else is eating pizza.

Good luck, and keep us posted...

          Re: Hello All!

Thanks for the encouragement and advice

Never thought of the chicken wings, good idea, I was worried about things being awkward going out with my friends.

Yeah, I second that study grazing. Also a bad habit of mine. I've been working on that lately.

I've been eating better the past few weeks, but decided I wanted to do more. I wanted to get serious and make a few changes in my life.

PS: first day is going good... I had a delicious omelet this morning, some string cheese for a snack during class, and I just finished an awesome BLT salad that I whipped up this morning. Plus I started taking the stairs to my 4th floor class.
