  • Hello!

(sorry, I originally posted this in the "second time around" forum...)

Hello all. Just wanted to introduce myself... my name is Dianna...

I've done Atkins before and managed to be successful at it (at first) but since I had no support from anyone, I didn't stick with it. I did lose approx 25 lbs before I gave up and went back to my old habits.

I'd like to give it another try... I'm SUPER unhappy with my weight and I'd really like to make a life change!

I'm about 200 lbs right now (I fluctuate between 201 and 205 really) and something that is going on with my mother is my motivation this time around... she's MORBIDLY obese and recently had gastric bypass surgery - during the procedure she had a stroke and lost the use of one of her legs... she's slowly gaining that use back, but because of her excessive weight her physical therapy is going very very slowly.

I'm watching her struggling through things because of her weight and I really REALLY don't want to end up in her position when I'm older... I've actually maintained my current weight for quite a few years (it's actually just a bit less now than it was 5 years ago... my highest weight was probably about 220 I'm ashamed to admit)

I recently began a new job at a daycare center (as their cook, of all things) and I'm hoping that working all day long will keep me from snacking on JUNK all day long and that will assist in the weight loss as well... also working full time again (after a 6 year hiatus) will keep me more active as well...

I've got a beautiful 6 year old daughter who's smarter than I am... she's a charmer and she's very talented. (dances and sings and an amazing performer already!) I haven't done a lot of wandering around in here, but I'm hoping there's a photo gallery of some kind so I can show her off!!

I'm also a widow. I lost my husband unexpectly when my daughter was just a one year old. She doesn't remember all of the fun she had with her daddy when she was little... doesn't really remember him except for the stories that I've shared with her about him. She's so much like him that it amazes me. (I imagine that she's a lot like me as well... but I don't notice that as much!)

If I've posted this in the wrong section, SORRY! The board moderators are welcome to move it (just tell me where to find it!)

I hope that I can become an active member in here...

Welcome, Dianna. So glad you joined us!

Sorry to read about your mom's problems. But I am also very glad that you have decided to take a different path.

Your little daughter sounds special! Keep telling her stories of her dad. When she is older she will "remember" those experiences.

Hiya! I'm enjoying lurking around the website... checking out what everyone is saying and doing...

I'm waiting for the book to arrive (I ordered it almost a week ago!) and then I can really get started! Right now I'm just doing what I remember doing before... no bread, no pasta, no potatos... off the soda (not so hard to do that, since I don't drink it much anyways) but the REALLY hard part is giving up MILK. I love milk... I could drink it with every single meal, and in between. It's been VERY hard to stop drinking that!

                But I'm working on it!

                    Re: Hello!

hi and welcome back to Atkins. You have the support of your mother and all of us here on the board!!! Anytime you need anything, have a questions, need a friend, need a good talking to (LOL) we'll be here to help you.

Until your book gets here you can use these links to get you started. Also, make sure you eat a variety of food so you don't get bored with the same old thing over and over. Make sure you are eating induction friendly food only!! If it's not on the acceptable food list it doesn't go in your mouth!!

Drink at least 64 ounces of pure water a day (not tea, soda, coffee, kool-aid) and exercise is mandatory! Find some form of exercise you can do and stick with it. You will enjoy it after awhile -- I never believed it before but I say it with pride now because it's true!

Good luck to you -- do this for yourself #1 but also for your daughter - teach her good eating habits while she is young so she doesn't have to go through this when she gets older. It's easier to cook 1 meal than to make one for you and one for her.

Hope to see you here alot!!

                      Re: Hello!

Thanks to Lisa and Carole for your support - I really do appreciate it! I'll check out the links you gave me Carole (thanks!)

Just to clarify a few things though... the big thing is that I DO NOT have my mothers support. She'd be extremely happy if I continued to gain weight and followed in her footsteps.

About a year ago, my daughter and I moved into my parents house to help out with the cooking and cleaning and general housekeeping... since my mother had limited mobility, the house was being neglected and my parents were eating mostly take-out food each night at dinner. I moved in and started fixing healthier meals (Mostly baking and broiling the meats) and my mother HATED my cooking. She's one who used to save the bacon fat to use in her cooking... she used a bunch of vegetable oil in all of her cooking... most things were fried... ICK. Any veggies were cooked so long that they were mushy and had lost their nutrition... ICK again! (sometimes she even fried the veggies!)

Okay, she told me one night that she wanted me to make spaghetti for dinner... but I had to cook it HER WAY. And she wrote out the directions... one of the steps was "brown the ground beef for the sauce, DO NOT DRAIN, add Ragu sauce and heat until hot and boiling" I drained it anyways and told her that I didn't. (ewwww)

Anytime I would announce that I was going to start eating less carbs, suddenly she'd want me to fix more items with carbs in them. She'd want pasta a lot for dinner - or some rice and potato dish...

that's just the way she is!

And as far as the exercise goes, I'm getting it!! I mentioned that I've begun working at a daycare, well in the afternoons I go back to do some heavy cleaning in the classrooms... the sweeping, mopping and vacuuming are really tiring me out!! I'm already down about 5 lbs in these 2 weeks since I started!! (and that first week I was eating like I always do, and lost a couple of pounds!)

I recieved my book in the mail yesterday - I'm about a 1/4 of the way through it, so far. Good Stuff.

I glanced through it before I started reading and it looks like I'll need to go out and get some vitamin supplements soon. Right now all I take are Vitamin C and Fish Oil.

                          Re: Hello!

Diana -- we'll have to stick together. My mother lives with us (has for a little over a year) -- she is diabetic but because of her age the endocrinologist isn't real strict with her. As I'm sitting here she just took her blood sugar reading and since she's at 84 she's going to have a molassas cookie...

I've just got to the point where what she eats doesn't bother me - I cook meals for her & the hubs and I modify things I can eat. We are all having chicken tonight but I'm having parmesean chicken and they are having fried chicken. They are having mashed potatoes and gravy -- I'm having cauliflower mashed with butter and a little cream (looks and tastes like mashed potatoes) we'll have broccoli as our veggie and a salad.

As long as I don't make a big deal about it she doesn't say much - in the beginning I would ask her not to eat sweets around me (I'm diabetic also) but she continued to - so I figured what the heck - she's making me stronger by doing this...I don't let her bother me!

                          Good luck!
                          Carole
