  • Day 1 - I need to do this

    Hi,

I've become so disguisted with myself and tried Atkins before. It works but I didn't stick to it for a number of excuses, not reasons, just excuses. So I set a start date for myself - today and bought the Atkins book (AGAIN). This time I planned and prepared. I weighed myself this morning. On Saturday I restocked my Freezer and Fridge with Akins friendly foods and this morning I planned out what I'd eat for the day. Although I do need to plan for the week. I will do that after my swim tonight. Feeling a little down about my weight but I know I'll see results - I did before. I just need to stick to it. I have an unhealthy relationship with food and I need to break it. I have fear that it won't work so I guess what I'm saying is that I need support, encouragment, help along the way.

    In advance I'm saying thanks!

This will work, I know it will.

Hiya Dee! Welcome to the ADBB and welcome back to Atkins. It worked for you before, and it'll work again. All you have to do is stick to the plan and have a little patience.

Most of us here have (or have had) what you call an "unhealthy" relationship with food, so no one understands better than we do. You'll find you get terrific support here, not to mention great tips and inspiration.

Post lots and keep us updated. We're all in this together!

Re: Day 1 - I need to do this

Good job stocking up and getting set to start! One day at a time, right?

One thing I did was make sure I was stocked enough in the first couple of weeks so I didn't have to run to the store and deal with overwhelming temptations. The smells coming from the bakery can be too much. Even now I avoid the store as much as possible. I've found a local farmers market where I can get both meat and veggies and not deal with the sights and smells of donuts and bread.

About your unhealthy relationship with food...I have one too...but instead of constantly giving in to cravings now, or over-ordering at drive-throughs...I've translated it into a new obsession of looking up recipes that are low carb. The bad news is I'm spending too much time doing this (most likely because I'm not happy in other parts of my life right now) but the good news is that looking at the recipes doesn't make me jump up to eat something.

Now if I could translate that recipe looking time into productivity at the office...that would be nice.

Good luck and hope to see more and less of ya!

        Started: 3/2/09

        ~280~270~260~250~240~230~220~210~200~190

        Realistic Final Goal: 190
        Stretch Goal: 140

Successfully did Atkins in 1998 using 1992 copy of the book...before it was "hip". Lost 60lbs, exercised daily, felt and looked great. And then I moved in with a junk-food loving man, my mom got sick and passed away, then I suffered a spinal cord injury, and junk-food dude left me...and now I weigh 292lbs. That's 22lbs MORE than I weighed the first time around. It's 10 years later...I know this will work for me again.

Thanks! Myself and my husband are doing this together. He lost about 140lbs the first time he did Atkins but unfortunately he put most of it back on and I gained a lot of weight since we've been together. Too much take out and addiction to carbs.

Although I have enough meats, fish and veggies to keep us going for a long time. Went a little crazy at the market but it's all healthy and carb free.

Good tip about checking out recipies. I can become obsessed with things like that but if it helps me then it's not such a bad thing.

I hope the other parts of your life improve. And thank you for reaching out. This helps a lot.

I now make it a challenge to low carb my favorite more healthful foods and gave up the unhealthy ones. hey girl, we are all a work in progress!! I think it's great that you have a partner to do this with you. Good luck to you both!

Re: Day 1 - I need to do this

Hi Dee -- you have an added benefit, your husband is going to be eating the same food and loosing weight with you! Don't get upset when he looses easier and more weight, it's just another way men get us!!! LOL

Good for you for getting good food in the house, that and planning meals a few days in advance will make it so much easier not to eat things you shouldn't. Having the book is a good reference tool - I carried mine with me the first couple weeks in case I had a question and wasn't on the board here.

Don't worry about the number the scale says you are now....set small goals for yourself, 5 pounds 10 pounds, 15 pounds whatever you are comfortable with and when you make them celebrate - eat an extra piece of celery, make a flax cookie, something, but make it something legal. Maybe buy a charm bracelet and each smal goal you get to buy yourself a charm. When you get to a small goal put a dollar (or more) in a jar and when you get to your goal do something wonderful!!

Good luck to both of you!!! Check the recipe sites so you don't get bored with the same old thing!! I'll be watching for your success story!!

Re: Day 1 - I need to do this

Good to see that you are starting back. I have that unhealthy relationship with food you are talking about. I like what Dave Ramsey says, "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired". I feel that way about my weight. I'm really sick and tired of going back and forth with my weight. I gain my 30 or 40 lbs back when vacation is over, and start right back over again Jan. trying to lose the same weight again. The problem is that it gets a little harder each time to lose it.

Anyway, try to enjoy this WOE like I do, in that you don't deal with the constant cravings that come with the old way of eating. I'm to the point that I eat just because it's time to eat, not because of an urge to eat due to an out of control appetite.
