Hi everyone I am new to the site... I have been on the diet for only 7 days and have already lost 5lbs kind of a disappointment but, I just know that is now 5 lbs I am no longer carrying around on my body.. I have choose Atkins because I am so disgusted with myself I have gained over 100 lbs in the last 2 years, found out I have type 2 diabetes, Hypothyroidism, fatty liver,enlarged spleen and I am scared I am going to die if I do not get this under control.. Everyone please pray for me because I want my life back. Good luck with your own weight loss and congratulations on your losses...

This is a good place for you to be. There are so many people who have the knowledge to help you. Five pounds is 20 sticks of butter!!!!! Even if the initial loss is water, it feels good to be on the move downward. Hang in there and good luck. You can do this. One day at a time....Lisa

. You have lost 5 pounds -- pick up a sack of flour and you'll see how much that is - that's great! Each of us has a different rate of losing so please don't get discouraged because you aren't loosing as quickly as someone else. I hope you have and have read the 2002 DANDR book - you need to know the reasons why this plan works so you can follow it properly.
Did your doctor put you on any diabetic medicine? Because it's well known that they can slow down weight loss - what meds are you on? Have you talked to an endocrinologist or to your internist? You need someone who specializes in the problems you are facing. Make sure you test your blood sugar as often as you've been told to and stay as far away from sugar as you can.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 last summer - I tried to do this my way and just cut out sugar but it didn't work - I found out I wasn't as smart as I thought I was. January 5, 2009 I started Atkins and have seen a marked difference in my numbers since I've started. When I was diagnosed my A1C was over 10 -- the last time it was checked (last month) it was just over 6.0 so my endocrinologist and internist are both very happy.
There is a diabetic forum here - we need more members to get something going more often there so I hope you will consider joining. There is also the century club for people who need to loose larger amounts of weight - also check the challenge area to see if there are any challenges you can join to help keep you accountable.
Make sure you are eating only food on the acceptable food list (no bars or shakes they aren't allowed), drink AT LEAST 64 ounces of pure water each day and do some form of exercise. When I first started I walked to the corner and was winded....but I've built up and walk 2 miles at a time and ride my stationary bike 15 miles every other day. The more exercise you do the more tone your body will get and you'll loose faster also. If you have trouble moving I've read where some people sit and do as much of an exercise CD has they can and it's helped - so don't say you are too big to exercise.

I take the Metformin for diabetes and Synthyroid for the Underactive Thyroid. I am only eating what is allowed no variation and I am also using the Ketostix test strips and I am in the LARGE range with that one more level be at max. I am having a increased energy level I am having the usual dizzy spells and headaches but I overall feel not as fatigued. I go back to my Dr. next month as I have systemic Lupus also and I so hope to be down about 20 plus pounds because he strongly suggested against the diet telling me how it was dangerous and so on and on... I feel like well so is the weight I think I will take my chances..

You can change his mind and he needs to do better research. Many studies show how beneficial low carb is. Prove him wrong. You can do this.Lisa

The color of the keto sticks doesn't mean you're in deeper keotsis or less keotsis all it means is you are in keotsis. Actually the darker the color the more dehydrated you are. You need to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day -- that will keep you hydrated.
Metformin is what I'm on for my diabetes and it is one that slows weight loss. Since your doctor doesn't approve of this WOE take him a copy of the DANDR book and ask him to read it -- then ask him to talk to you about it when you go back the next time. My mother's oncologist was the one who told me about Atkins originally because he was had lost weight using it. There are doctors who believe in the this WOE so don't get too upset if he doesn't believe -- my Internist doesn't think much of Atkins either so since he won't read the book we just don't talk about how I'm loosing weight. Of course he is tall and thin and has never had a weight problem. I am doing what he said I needed to do -- I'm losing weight, I'm losing on a healthy diet and I am able to stay on track because it's so easy -- I don't see a problem.
Keep doing what you are doing -- but remember, the weight is not going to fall off of you - not because you aren't trying but because of the medical problems. If you didn't have medical problems you probably wouldn't be here so be grateful for the weight you do loose and keep going.Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

HI, right back at ya!! Welcome to the board! I'm so glad you found it! You can and will prove your doc wrong. I never saw my doctor until after I dropped nearly 40 pounds since the last time I'd seen him. He was speechless. It was awesome. He didn't have one bad word to say about this WOE. That was nice and it felt so good to have his support with whatever I was doing to get those kind of results! You can get that too unless he's unwilling to acknowledge your transformation. Hang in there! There are different results and different time lines for different people. If you keep at it, the science behind it has no choice but to deliver the results you want! You CAN do this!!
