  • Atkins in Auckland

    Hi Everyone

I swear I logged in a few weeks back but the system can't find me so here I am again :O)

I'm starting back on Atkins after many years break. About 10 years ago I started on the plan and lost 18kgs in 3 months, I was going so well, and then one day I decided to have pasta for lunch and it was like giving a junky a new fix - I never went back and slowly but surely gained all my weight and more.

I've had a few ill attempts since then but wasn't on the forums so I'm hoping this will help hugely to give and receive support along the way.

So it's back to the basics for me. I have the book on hand and raring to go... *** Hellooooo Induction ***

My biggest problem with Atkins is lunchtime. If I run out of time and don't get sorted I find the options are a bit limited at the local cafe's.

    Q. What do you all do when you're out and about and it's lunchtime?

Oooh another question. Does anyone else have problems with constipation on this plan?

Thanks everyone, I look forward to reading loads of posts and getting my head back into focus!

      Glad to see you here.
Planning is a key. Some one on this board always says that "failing to plan is planning to fail" And it is so true. We try to be prepared for most things. Do I go very far without boiled eggs, cheese strings and pepperoni bites - no But if I have to do something suddently - burgers without the bun have been OK for me. Some salads in restaurants are fine. Grilled meats and fish are usually OK. Keep working on it you will figure it out. You need plenty of motivation though

And do you have the 2002 book? It is the one we swear by here at ADBB

        Welcome to the board, Sandra!

Be sure to check out the Second Time Around Club for those of us who have done Atkins before. There is a roll call everyday that helps keep us focused and accountable.

There are lots of good legal things that we can eat for lunch. My standby is a bunless cheeseburger but most places have lots of choices for us. Even small cafes usually have salads and meat, fish or chicken without all the carbage added to it. Just ask, and most places will cook you something legal. Just not McDonald's, LOL!

As for the constipation, eating enough veggies and drinking lots of water helps. And I sometimes make a MIM, muffin in a minute, that's made from flaxseed meal and it helps a lot too.

You can do this, so just keep an eye out for the right places and meals. Good luck to you!

Hiya Chicky and welcome from me too.

So glad you finally made it here - great place and everyone is so helpful.

Lunch on the run - I try to make sure I always have boiled eggs, BBQ chicken, cheese and a good salami (but not to much of these) on hand in case I know I am going to be out and about, I can take some with me.

Constipation can be an issue for me still - I think it is just me. I eat flax cereal a couple of times a week and eat my 3 cups of veg and drink in excess of 4 litres of water a day and still I find myself blocked up at least a couple of times a week sometimes.

Check out the recipe section on this board, simply amazing - we have some very creative people.

            Thanks Everyone

I'll get sorted with the hard boiled eggs, I like them with curry and mayo mmmm. Also bought cheese and salami to work so I can snack on that kind of thing. The Salami is .6gm per 100gm of salami which I think was pretty good.

I'm getting into the groove of Atkins again and enjoying having steak, eggs, seafood etc in abundance and not having to count calories as such.

Still feel 'weird' eating cheese/salami but I know it also really works to get the fat in and hence - the fat off!

            :O)

              Re: Atkins in Auckland

CHeese and salami are great snacks but be careful with them. If your weight loss stalls, you might have to remove them from your food list or at least limit them (cheese is already limited to 3-4oz a day)... 1oz = 28g, so 84 to 112g a day

                hi and welcome

watch the salami for nitrates -- same with pepperoni and other processed meats..they can cause you to retain water and stall weight loss.

other than eating foods on the acceptable food list, drink at least 64 ounces of water daily - only pure water counts, not tea, soda, kool-aid, etc. Exercise is mandatory also ... the sooner you start the better you will feel.

                Good luck to you

                  Re: Atkins in Auckland

Yay, another Aucklander! I've managed to get a few cafes to do me caesar salads without the dressing (sugar) and croutons etc, but I have been vigilant at making lunch every day.

Dinner-wise there are a lot more options for induction in Akld, Mongolian BBQ restaurants and Korean BBQ restaurants are easy as long as they're self service.

One thing you will probably notice on Atkins in NZ is EVERYTHING here has added sugar or other bad carbs. I've been to all the supermarkets I can and all the salami, ham and bacon has added sugar, so it's banned. I hope the one you found doesnt have sugar - let me know what type if not!

                  Good luck!
