  • YIPPY! I'm on the atkins diet!!!

Hello everyone! My name is Jillian, I am 24, married and a mommy of a 2 and a half year old little girl. When I was 20 I only weighed 105 pounds at 5'3". I quit smoking and gained 25 pounds, then at age 21 I got pregnant and gained a MASSIVE 75 pounds. I suffered through postpartum depression and post traumatic stress disorder from a traumatic birth where I thought I was going to die. I dealt with it for almost 2 years before I couldn't take it anymore and finally got the help and medication I needed. Sadly during the depression I didn't care about myself so I never worked out and I would eat whatever I wanted. So I didn't lose very much after the delivery except for 20 pounds. I tried a lot of diets but nothing was working. Most diets would require you to eat 3 meals and snack in between every meal and although I am indeed overweight, it's not exactly from binge eating. In fact I can't stand to eat two full meals in a day most days. I tend to eat one meal and healthy snacks, I drink a lot of water. Come time to my period I binge eat, which will definitely put the weight on since my metabolism is used to running slow since I don't eat a whole lot any other time.

Anyways.... I like this Atkins diet. I do force myself to eat two meals because I know it's what is healthy for me... it'd be better if I could eat three... but two is a good start. Cheese and cream cheese are actually my favorite snacks when I don't feel like a meal. I went from 185 to 173 in 5 days, but I encountered a problem. I am back up to 180 and a bit confused. I have an abscessed tooth and two days ago I was popping Tylenol to help with the pain. I couldn't take it anymore by the next day and went to the dentist. It was obviously abscessed... I was then put on penicillin and given vicodin for the pain until I can decide if I want it pulled or saved. I was told I can take Ibuprofen for the pain with the vicodin, which I have been doing... I don't know if these pills have something to do with gaining 7 pounds over night or not.. If anyone has any input it would be gladly appreciated. In the time being I will find the appropriate thread in here to ask this question in as well.

Welcome -- much success on your weight loss journey. Here are some links to help you -- make sure you are eating only foods on the acceptable foods list, drinking at least 64 ounces of pure water a day and exercising. You really NEED to eat at least 3 times a day -- make sure you get some veggies in each meal to keep your blood sugar stable during the day. We follow the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book on this forum - you should get and read the book so you understand the way it works.

My mom let me barrow that book. I have been reading up on it. I can't seem to remember AT ALL if I had ANY water yesterday. I know I had my diet green tea... but as far as water, I have no clue. I know that in the induction you can eat UP TO 20g of carbs. I try to keep myself around 10 a day if that. I can't eat three times a day without feeling like I am going to explode. I do make little snacks for me to eat throughout the day though... things with cheese and cream cheese, that are low carb. I sometimes get an atkins bar or atkins shake.... I am doing a lot better at eating then I used to be doing.

        Welcome to the board, JillianJ!

You have a lot going on in your life and I hope you soon have your dental problem fixed and over with. The medications you are taking are probably interferring with your weight loss so the sooner you can stop taking them, the better.

Let us know how it all turns out!

I would suggest that you keep a written record of what and how much you eat and the water you drink. They say that memory is the biggest liar of all! And it's always nice to be able to go back and see what you were doing that made you lose or gain weight at any given time. Good luck!

          Welcome to the board!

Please make sure you eating your 3 cups of veggies a day - 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup of other veggies from the acceptable list. Water is SO important, please drink the minimum 64oz or more...I drink at least 96 oz per day, and its tough at first, but then you crave it

Oh and one more thing...cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day, so watch portions! Cheese can causes stalls in some people.

Other than that...I hope your tooth problem clears up quickly

Re: YIPPY! I'm on the atkins diet!!!

remember cheese is limited to something like 3-4oz a day. some of us can't even handle that (raises hand) lol. If I have more than 2oz a day cheese and dairy slow me down, so more often than not i just use cream in my coffee and avoid cheese 80% of the time. Maybe two days i week I have a meal with 1oz of cheese. It does suck because cheese is one of my favorite snacks too, but its too easy for me to overeat it so just like anything else I tend to overeat, I taught myself to do it in low moderation.

as far as you gain goes, dont worry too much! i lost 10 my first week, and gained 5 my second and third. its something called post induction stall syndrome (PISS). all that initial weight loss is usually water, so you may be dehydrated. once your body gets back in the groove, it tends to hold onto water again at the same time you're losing fat, so it may show as a stall or even a gain. but dont worry because as long as you are eating proper induction food and drinking enough water you are losing fat. try keeping up with your measurements, what the scale doesnt show the tape measure sometimes does.

don't worry about the idea of eating 3 huge meals and 2 small snacks. eat when you're hungry and eat till you're full. that being said however, you -should- be aiming for 3 cups of veggies a day like claire says. i try to make my biggest meal of the day breakfast (which believe me took some doing, from someone who spent years not eating breakfast) it keeps my metabolism going all day, and i suffer less cravings and less hunger later in the day as long as i start out right! i try to get a good chunk of my fats in for breakfast, and have a light lunch and a light dinner most of the time, and only snack if my other meals are at weird times of the day.

cut out the atkins bars and shakes though. they may say they are ok for induction but they lie! chocolate, milk, whey, all the stuff those are made with aren't on the acceptable food list, and are only ok if you're in an emergency where you have gone more than 5-6 hours without eating. those might be slowing you down.

Ok. I'll definitely measure myself. The medication I have to keep taking until I decide on a root canal or getting the tooth pulled... after that I believe I'll have to be on medication for another week. Hopefully I can get over this little struggle while I'm on the medication. I was reading up on people who have struggles and what they should eat on the atkins. Maybe I'll try it that way for the high resistant.

I'll have to start on a journal right away to keep track. Thank you for your help
