  • Hi, I'm Gina

    Hello to all,

I am trying this again after about 7 years. I have been on WW, etc. It's just not for me. So I am on this goal to be at goal weight by Oct 16, 2010. The last time I tried this I was successful when I did it. I just want to make sure that I am here for my kids when they are older. If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Also, I have Hashimoto's Disease which is also a Thyroid issue. So if anyone out there knows of anyone who has been successful doing Atkins with Hashimoto's Disease, please let me know.

    Thanks

    Gina

        Welcome to the board!

Do you have the 2002 edition of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution? It's the one we use here and it's a must read.

As for suggestions, drink lots of water, (64 oz. a day), eat your veggies (at least 12 grams a day), get some exercise and read the book.

        Good luck to you!

            Re: Hi, I'm Gina

I am new here and I also have thyroid problems, I was just diagnosed but I think I had it for over 6 years. I have hypothyroidism, which in the weight department is closely related.
I gained about 25 lbs over the past 6 years and just started the Atkins, I am in the induction stage just about finished the first week. I lost about 5 lbs I am pretty happy since I have not been able to lose anything with the thyroid.
I wish we had a thyroid Atkins diet forum since we all know what we all are going through.
Good luck and you can contact me anytime if you wish to talk about anything.

              Re: Hi, I'm Gina

Thank you for all the greetings!!

There are a couple of threads for thyroid that I have been looking at. I have read that people with thyroid issues are sensitive to carbs on other websites. So I am hoping that Atkins will be the kicker for my weight. Yes, we can do this together.

                Re: Hi, I'm Gina

                Hi Gina,
I am keeping my fingers crossed, I lost a fast 6 pounds but now, as always, I am stalling, but I am not giving up. I always seem to stall at 6 pounds. It can't be water becasue I am on a pepetual diet and there is no extra water.
I ordered the New Revolutin book so I do this right. I will give it one more week then I give up.
My Dr. told me not to doet until the Thyroid is under control but I didn't want to gain too much before that happens.
Thanks for answering. We have the same hopes. I never had a weight problem and this is a kick in the head. But this is what we were dealt and I will give it my best.
I hope you are doing well.

                  Re: Hi, I'm Gina

Rosewood - you need to give this more than 2 weeks before you quit....if you have lost 6 pounds in a week it's too early to say you have "stalled". You say you are on a perpetual diet so your body may be getting use to this way of eating. How much water do you drink daily? You should be drinking AT LEAST 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added except ice).

Are you eating only foods on the acceptable foods list? No more than 3 Splenda packets per day - no aspartame, no bars or shakes, exercising daily? You might post your menu for a couple days here Review My Menu - Atkins Diet. If someone sees something that needs to be changed they will let you know.

There is also a Thyroid thread that you may be able to get additional help from Thyroid - Atkins Diet.

This is from the "Read before you start" post on the Induction thread

Be sure to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
                  Filtered water
                  Mineral water
                  Spring water
                  Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
                  Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carb content)
                  Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

                    Re: Hi, I'm Gina

                    Welcome, Gina,

You'll find tons of support here! CHeck in often to continue to be motivated.

My mother has hypothyroidism, and I am just _waiting_ to be diagnosed. She was in her early 30's and I'm 28.

I actually met with a specialist who tested me for the condition and I'm ----just---above the line in the "box" people put the tyroid test in. But I exhibited all the symptoms (weight gain, freezing fingers and toes all the time, DRY skin, nails, hair, etc). The DR said he didn't want to medicate me just yet, because I was still above the cut off point for medication.

And I have to tell you something: since this way of eating, my hands are no longer FREEZING, my skin is clearing up, my hair looks shinier, and I'm beginning to think that I had a gluten or wheat issue the whole time.

Stick to it, the changes are incredidle.

                      Re: Hi, I'm Gina

                      Thank you!

I have read many, MANY articles on Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's Disease about Gluten and wheat sensitivity. That was one of the reasons that I decided on Atkins again. When I started looking into the way that I eat, and things that I read . . .the light bulb finally came on, lol. I was on ww and I did great for 4 months, but then not so good. That is when I started reading the articles more on Hashimoto's Diesease and Gluten and Wheat. Well then I quit ww to try Gluten free way of life. I couldn't even do that for a week!!!! The gluten free products were mostly ok, but the bread was terrible!!!! This is when I realized that I was a carb junkie and decided atkins again. Although I am not starting until tomorrow, this will be a long a fun journey to loose the weight. I have done it before on atkins, and now that I am more knowledgeable on my body. I should have even more success this time and I LOVE the food. The only thing is that my SIL was on it for awhile for her wedding and she lost a LOT of hair in clumps, what was that all about? I was thinking it was maybe vitamins or something? Does anyone know or have suggestions? Oh yeah is there a link on what all the abreviations mean? Some I can figure out but others I can't.

                      Thanks
                      Gina

                        Re: Hi, I'm Gina

Thanks so much imagood1,I havealwasy had a problem with driniking water it makes me sick like now I just had a glass and I amnot doing to well. I do try.
I was not eating any carbs at all, I don't have the book yet and didn't find a good site for that til now. I had some ricotta cheese, I thought was ok. I had to use some breath mints on Sunday (sugar free) I am in the choir and didn't want to offend. I don't usually use them, they did have carbs so I stopped.
I was not eating veggies, I am now eating a litte salad with some dressing I made from 0 carb mayo and ground mustard, yummy but just a little. I am not finding it hard to folow the rules otherwise, I never even had a drop of forbidden foods. No coffee or tea, I tried diet soda when I saw that it was aspartame, I tossed it half way through. I am determined to do this and do it right.
I had some veggies yesterday with my evening meal I actually dropped a tad. I weigh myself by kilos I get a better picture that way. I dropped .5 that is one whole pound. I am excited again.
I am sorry to seem panicky but cant fail.
I really appreciate your support, I have no one here to do that. I started at 166 I am now 160 I never seem to be able to drop below 160, I hate that. I had gained a pound then dropped one. or I would have been 159 today.
And no I am not going to quit especially now that I recovered. I take my vitamins and the thyroid pills (I don't take prescriptions meds. my doctor approved a natural supplement I wanted to try it seems to be working so far) I will check out the thyroid sites you suggested.
Thanks again for your support I really needed that little kick in the bum. 8^)
