  • New Atkins for Lifer!

I recently started atkins, I'm still in the induction phase and the sugar cravings were horrible! I feel great though! I not nearly as lethargic, I have energy and feel good about myself that I am taking control of my weight and more importantly of my health! I am still in shock at the hidden sugars in everything we eat! (Speaking of - anyone have a bacon brand not cured with sugar?) I have found great recipes here that will keep me from "cheating" It is nice to have the support that can be found here.

    Hello, chinanurse

    Welcome to ADBB!

Bacon with no sugar - I don't know where you are located, but I get my sugar-free bacon from Walmart. The brand is Gwaltney, and it used to come in a red box... in some stores, I'm beginning to see it in a clear wrapper without the box. On the front, it says "No Sugar Added". It does have nitrates/nitrites, but I have not been able to find a bacon that's both nitrate/nirtrite free and sugar-free. All of the nitrate/nitrite free bacon I have found has some sort of sugar in it. So, I try to keep bacon (sausage, too) to a minimum as a treat, and I opt for the suagr-free. The good thing about Gwaltney is that it is inexpensive, too.

I'm glad that you're spending some time in the recipe forum here - it's great, isn't it? Have you checked out Linda's site yet? Here is the link, in case you haven't seen it yet. Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Home

    Best wishes to you.

      Welcome to the board!

I'm glad your energy is back and you are doing well on the diet. The sugar cravings will end soon and you will wonder how you ever ate sweets things after a while on Atkins.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Really? I hope so! I was doing great until my goof with the splenda yesterday and I had HORRIBLE cravings yesterday evening. Sugar free gum seemed to help a lot - satisfied the sweet and something to chew. (Caused some rather nasty digestion issues though - ewww)

I think perhaps once you have overcome the Splenda debacle, you should lay off the gum if you can. It is not a great thing to keep adding sweeteners into our system.

The name of the bacon is called Carolina Pride and I get it from Walmart. It's in a red/yellow box and reads "no carbs" on it. Welcome and good luck!

Debacle is a great way to describe it! I buy the sugar free gum and I know it isn't the best, but I needed something to get me through Chewing gum is an addiction for me too - helps me concentrate. Is the sugar free bad too?

Thanks for the heads up on the bacon - I went to two different grocery stores looking for bacon with no sugar. I had no idea there was SUGAR in bacon!

                Re: New Atkins for Lifer!

Sugar free is not sweet free. And we have to worry about sweeteners. We are only allowed three a day in total. And for some people eating sweetened stuff probably stimulate insulin production. We cut out most carbs on induction to get away from insulin production so to consume sweeteners would be counter productive.

ok I see....ugh - even though I am still in ketosis according to the strips - I think my induction is going to be a lot longer than two weeks - I am still "tweaking" everything and trying to get it right.

If I'm in ketosis, will i still burn fat(LOOSE WEIGHT) eventhough I'm not getting all the details exactly right (like the gum)?
