    Re: First Day

Hi and welcome Ruthie!! I'm glad you found the board and have done your research! This is a wonderful way to live and eat I hope after the first couple weeks you will feel the same way. I am 51, type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure, triglicerides and cholesterol....hopeing to get everything under control and to get off the meds I'm on currently.

Here are some links that may help -- make sure you eat enough veggies besides meat & cheeses, drink at least 64 ounces of water daily (I drink 150 oz a day) - that is pure water, nothing added (except ice) and start some form of exercise tomorrow. Measure yourself so when you aren't loosing pounds you'll be able to see the inches coming off. If you need anything all you have to do is ask!

This is from the "Read before you start" post

Be sure to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

          Welcome to the board, Ruthie!

It's great that you don't have any medical problems! I don't either and I will be 64 this week! To keep ourselves healthy, we need to make Atkins our way of life because it's the best diet there is.

Check out the Food and Recipe forum for meal ideas to keep the diet interesting and remember to eat your veggies.

Also check out the 50+ forum. Good luck to you!
