Well I'm new to this board, i am here to lose fat. I am currently an amateur bodybuilder. I love doing cardiovascular and lifting but my diet really sucks. This is why I've come to this board seeking you guys help! I've read and seen some great success stories regarding the Atkins diet. Am i right to understand that Atkins diet is a ketogenic diet?

My current weight is 224 lbs im 6'2 and around 20-23% Bodyfat Looking to get down to 200-195lbs and 10% Bodyfat. Tried other diets i just can't stick with them i love my food too much and im at the point now that i just want to give up all together. So what I'm really saying is Atkins is my last shot at getting down to my desired weight. I would like to see results fast as I've seen in the success stories but also i would like to retain my muscle mass and not lose any at all if possible.

Another question that i have is, is the Atkins diet just Meats, eggs and fish? If so could i supplement meals with protein shakes? Thanks in advance and i hope this works

    Welcome to the board, ToNk!

You need to get a copy of the 2002 edition of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution because it explains the diet fully and is a great motivator.

Atkins is not just meat, cheese and eggs! You need to eat veggies from the acceptable list. Please read the Atkins Diet Phases forum for details and read the book. This is a wonderful diet full of good, rich food but devoid of the junk foods that make us fat.

    Good luck to you!

Welcome Mr. Amateur Bodybuilder. Nice you have you here.
Meat, eggs, and fish are the basics but we have to eat vegetables too. Take supplements and drink plenty of water. And we follow a list of allowed foods - avoiding everything else those first two weeks.

Here are some threads in our FAQ that will help you.

i eat far more veggies on atkins than i do meat. faaaaar more.i should be green, really. it sickens me that the media has taken this flat out LIE about what atkins is, and spread it all over the place so that people who really need to lose weight don't know what to believe.

3 cups of veggies a day. every day. yep, every single day. i have some kind of veggie with every single meal 99% of the time. remember it isnt a high protein diet, its a high fat diet. i can eat the skin of chicken, real butter, real cheese, i can have heavy cream in my coffee, red meat and fatty pork chops etc etc. I can eat any of those things without guilt, and i've lost a lot of weight doing it.

as far as wondering if you get quick results goes... it does depend on the person to some degree...
The first time I did atkins I went from 212 to 180 in about 2 months, and no, none of my muscle was lost. I'm eating protein for goodness sake, my muscles were fine. This time i started at 226.6 and after 2 months and some change i'm down 19.6lbs and 22.5 inches.

The first time around I hadn't read the book, and although i lost weight, I lost site of my goals when life got complicated, and gained it all back then some (so plz read the book). I ended up at 250 and it took me 2-3 years to get from that to 226.6 doing it "my way". thats only 23.4 pounds! This time i've gone from 226.6 to 207 in 72 days. thats slow for some, and fast for others. point is, you'll lose fat, but the pace is your own and dependant on a lot of factors.
