  • Hi all. UK newbie

    Hiya everyone.
I'm starting The atkins diet on Monday after not doing it for a few years. I'm completely fed up with the way I look at the moment and know that my weight is 99% of the problem.
The biggest problem I think I will have on the induction is that I work shifts and would love some tips on what I can eat mainly for breakfast and what drinks I can have during the induction period.

    Thanks alot

    Welcome to ADBB
I hope you have a good Monday start. Have you bought in some induction foods.

On induction I ate eggs for breakfast. Eggs are pretty much the perfect food and they are quick and you can do a lot of things with them. My favourite is scrambled with a bit of cheese and maybe bacon no and then. You can also make crustless quiches using eggs. These are practical because it keeps in the fridge. Sometimes left over meats are good to have for breakfast.

Water is the thing to drink. Drink plenty of it. Liver and kidneys need water to help work out the ketosis and you have to supply it.
I do not remember drinking anything else.

The book lists a few things you can drink that are legal in addition to water so you can have a look at that too.

make sure you drink AT LEAST 64 ounces of water -- that is MINIMUM -- more is better. Shift work makes it a little more challenging but not impossible. There are plenty of fods you can eat - make sure you plan ahead and make some meals ahead of time so you won't be tempted to eat what you shouldn't.

Here are links I send to newbies -- they are what helped me and hopefully they will help you. Good luck. If you need anything all you have to do is ask!

Rules of Induction can be found here:

The Induction Acceptable Foods List can be found here:

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the Induction area

Be sure to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
      Filtered water
      Mineral water
      Spring water
      Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
      Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carb content)
      Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

        Hello!

My favourite breakfast is an omelette. Not the boring plan kind but almost a pizza version.

Put two eggs (or three) and a good dash of double cream in a bowl. Whisk with a stick blender. Melt butter in pan. Add egg mixture. Add salt, pepper and oregano. Add you favourite pizza toppings (bacon, avocado, ham, tomato, onion etc.) sprinkle with cheddar and after 3 mins, place under the grill for 3 mins. It's not like any omelette I had tried before. Really filling and delicious.

        Good luck.

Make sure you don't deduct fibre from carbs as UK labels have already automatically deducted the fibre so the carb figure on the label is the net carb figure.
