  • Fat Guy in Tampa

    Good evening all.

I am a 27 year old business professional in (Citrus Park) Tampa, Florida. When i was a kid I was a big boy. At 13, I weighed 295 pounds. I was picked on non-stop, and had horrible self esteem. I went into high school and things didnt change. Then one day, something snapped in my head (also severly sprained my ankle) i decided to start the original Atkins (Bacon & Eggs) Diet. Over that winter and the next summer I lost 90 pounds and showed up to school unrecognized. My self esteem was great, and I learned to treat people like i wasn't. My friend base grew, I got active in sports, and for the first time girls acknowledged me. Life was good. Then came the college years and slowly the weight creeped up. Granted I was 6'00" now oposed to 5'6". Last year I got engaged to the love of my life, and yet I fell into a state of depression from inlaw headaches, to losing my business (unemployed at the time) losing my condo, family and financial whoa's, and on top of it all my bride to be develops a stomach condition. Still alive now 300 lbs, I am married, have decent employment, and now renting a nice townhouse (saving up again for a single family home).

HELP ME PLEASE...I DON'T KNOW HOW TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP!?!?!?!?

Please somebody help me. I have tried everything to get started, but due to the depression of it all, i can't get the ball rolling. I know once I get going on a routine I can get my esteem and drive back....

Is anyone local to me, maybe a motivator, or gym/walking partner?

I could use any positive motivators out there.

Thanks for having a site to network so many people with the same cause....

Look forward to getting to know everyone...

hi and welcome -- I'm glad you came back to Atkins .... now let's get you going the correct way! We use the 2002 edition of DANDR (Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution) book....please purchase a copy as soon as you can so you know the science and reasoning behind the plan. Here is a low cost book you can purchase Half.com / Books / Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution

I am sending you some links that will help get you started -- these are links that helped me when I first started and I like to send them to newbies now.

There are 3 things you need to do first off -- eat only foods on the acceptable food list -- get plenty of fats in during induction so you aren't hungry. Drink plenty of water (see below about that) and start some form of exercise immediately. 4 months ago I could barely walk to the corner and back - now I walk several miles at a time, do exercise video's and ride a stationary bike 25 miles at a time (and I'm over 50 -- so please don't try to tell me you can't do anything!! LOL)

Good luck -- if you need anything all you have to do is ask!

Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t --- start today!

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

Additionally (after your 64 ounces daily), you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

You know when I came back, I couldn't get a single day without cheating, but I kept talking to my self, cheering myself on, and finally I got a cheat free day under my belt and the next was easier and now I'm losing. We can do this.

This is something you have to do for yourself. For once, it's all about YOU and it's okay to be selfish with it. You're going to learn to pat yourself on the back..for the success and the self-induced butt kickings when you slip. You are the only one who can control YOU. What do you want...really want? Take it and own it.

One bit of advice...take the exercise slowly..don't just jump into it or you'll burn out quickly. When you get that sudden burst of energy, do something with it, but don't go overboard. As you get further into Atkins, you'll find that those energy bursts come more and more often and before you know it, you'll have a complete exercise schedule.

Good luck, big hugs and huge Congrats to you.

Hi!! Your headline grabbed me because I'm in Tallahassee, but I have family in Tampa that I visit often (about once a month). My story is a little like yours... did really well my first go round with Atkins, but now I'm finding it hard to get back on a routine of it. Have tried to start over many times with no success. I'm planning on starting again in 2 days... I could use some motivation as well. Maybe we can cheer eachother on... even if it's long distance.

This is how I got here.....I googled inducion recipes and came up with this link and now I'm hooked. Completely addicted to this bulletinboard. This is my first post too but I have been reading for weeks. It's like I can't get enough information. I feel like i already know most of the people on here and they are full of inspiration and wonderful ideas and they are the greatest cheerleaders I have ever seen.

Check out the never ending induction recipes, there are some great ones on there. The egg nog shake for instance......YUM! It has saved me many times because I'm a single mom of 3 and mornings are CRAZY around my house.

You can do this!!! You took the first step and joined. cheers to you!
