  • Hello from Dallas!

I have been lurking around on this forum off-and-on since January and have finally decided that I need to take the plunge and make a lifestyle change. On June 7th I will be ready to start the Atkins way of life. I would really like to start immediately but I will be out of town and have not prepared for it. This is my second time around with Atkins and the first time I lost 45 lbs. but for some reason or another I didn't stick with it. Right now I need to lose about 75 lbs.

A little bit about me.......I just turned 49 this month and will be starting nursing school in July. I have realized that I need to be in better physical health if I want to be successful with my dream of being a nurse. I have been happily married for 30 years and have three children and a granddaughter.

Reading the forums on this web site made me realize that I can be successful at this, especially with all the support that I have seen. I'm looking forward to the journey.

Hello Dallas! I don't write much here, but read it all the time for support, and thought I would say hi to a neighbor! I lost 100 pounds on Atkins years ago, recently put back about 25 of them and am in the process of getting them back OFF. Good luck to you, this DOES work, you'll be glad you took the plunge!!
100 pounds gone forever from 12/03-11/04. Thank you Dr. Atkins, may you rest in peace...

        Re: Hello from Dallas!

Thanks! Even if right now it's more like -100 +25 -7... a 82 pound loss? No matter, the 18lbs will be gone soon enough. Why? Because I said so!!

One of the things that helped me most was attitude. One little phrase was so critical. I never, ever said "I can't eat that." I always say "I DON'T eat that." Try it. You'll see.

One more Texan comes out of the woods, hey there... I'm close to Lake Fork. Just joined the ADBB this week, but a long time follower of Adkins. Five weeks in ketosis. Inches falling off, not so good on lbs...just 1 stinking lb.

              Re: Hello from Dallas!

hi and welcome Dallas!! Congratulations on being accepted into nursing school - that's wonderful! I'm glad you are making the change for yourself - it doesn't work trying to loose for others or the wrong reasons!

Here are some links that may help you get started again -- we have a lot of challenges starting the first of the month, some are exercise and some are non-exercise challenges...it's a great way to meet people and be accountable to yourself. Check them out!!

              Induction Acceptable Foods List:

Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t find a way and start today!

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
              Filtered water
              Mineral water
              Spring water
              Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
              Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
              Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

Haha! Look at it this way... would you rather weigh 300lbs and be a size 6, or weigh 100lbs and be a size 26? Weight is a good indicator, but let's face it, nobody sees the number but you. Everybody sees the lost inches though!! Congrats!
