  • Second time at Atkins, 4 years later

    Hi everyone,

Was on Atkins about 4 or 5 years ago and had great success. Did not know about phases back then and pretty much stayed on induction for about a year while working out at the gym 6x's a week. Now 4 years later I had changed my diet and my metabolism had changed again so thought to go back onto Atkins. About 5 days into induction and have not noticed any weight differences but sticking to it. I'm 27 and I am from California.

One of the best things you can do is purchase the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book (DANDR) – if you can’t find one locally www.half.com and www.Amazon.com have them pretty inexpensively. That way you know how the plan really works and can do it properly. In the meantime read the "stickies" at the top of the Induction forum. If you follow the plan 100% as it's written you will loose weight, even those of us who loose slowly DO loose weight!

Good luck on your journey. Here are links that will help get you started. Make sure you are eating induction recipes only until you are ready to move onto OWL.
Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t find a way and start today! Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases
    Carole

Also make sure you carefully think about what you eat. Because you have done it before some bad habits sometimes sneak in. I "ate this and lost before" It is important to be honest and really follow the rules. (I am kind of speaking from experience here. Working on being straight with myself )
Good luck. I hope to see more of your posts around.

Hi echo, don't be surprised if you don't drop a huge amount on Induction because you don't have massive amount to lose. Also it may go slower since you have bounced up and down again. From your initial post it sounds like you are looking at Atkins to get the weight off, but not necessarily as a way to live. If you adopt this as your new life and continue through the rungs properly to maintenance you will have a much better chance of keeping it off forever. The book is inspiring and an excellent guide to how and why this lifestyle works. Those with the most success here are the folks who have actually progressed through the rungs as designed by Dr. A and have stayed with the plan on Maintenance as well. Wishing you great success on your Atkins journey.

Oils are good sources of fat. So is beef if you eat that. Butter and majo. Avocado and olives can be really good too.

              Have you hit Ketosis yet?

I dont know...I am suddenly today really thirsty and drinking water doesnt help, I just stay thirsty... I wonder if thats the sodium in my body dropping low and water weight etc (dont know all the details) my breath has always smelled bad before atkins (haha) so I dont know really if I am in ketosis ... Just bought a new daily vitamin today and fiber pills that dont contain fake sweetener

Fats can be butter, mayo, avocado, olive oil, cream cheese is fatty, cream in your hot beverages==lots of possibilities. It does not have to come from meat.

The thirstiness is normal when you start drinking water. It will level out but you do tend to be thirstier than before when you drink a lot of water.
