  • Newbie :)

    Hi Everyone!

Just a quick introduction. My name is Carol, I'm 43, and live in Wisconsin. I am really excited to be here.

I'm well into making my lifestyle changes. I have lost 62 lbs (non-Atkins), although low in carbs. I have found that the carbs were not low enough though, and have decided to jump start my metabolism now by changing my way of eating and adding more vigorous exercise. So I am starting Atkins Induction for as long as it takes. I have a long way to go to meet goal, but I have come so far already.

I hope to make some friends here and give and get support from people who are working on the same goal, to be our true, realized selves!

    Hi Carol, Welcome to ADBB!
Sounds like you have been doing great so far. Induction is great and safe for extended periods but when you get there don't be afraid to move up the rungs either. Some people actually lose faster when they add more veggies and things. I found for me (also in my forties) it was less the additional carbs on the rungs and more the amount of calories I was eating. For way too long I was still eating the same size meals I used to eat without pausing to see if I was really physically hungry. Although we don't count calories, the extra calories from eating when I really didn't need to was stopping my losses. Now I stop before i am full and wait 20 mins, knowing that if I am still really hungry I can eat again. Most times I find myself feeling really full 20 mins later. before you decide you need to stay in Induction for months give this some thought to see if it might work for you too.

        Re: Newbie

        Thanks for the welcomes!

Chinadoll...I really appreciate all you had to say. I think with most things we have to adjust accordingly, which is why I decided to start on Atkins and stop the other plan (my own) I was on. It worked great for that initial loss, but stopped working as effectively for me.

Thank you again, for all your input, and for taking time to help me out. You had so many great suggestions and thoughts.

Anyone know where I can get some help with my ticker? I keep trying to make it work but it won't.

          Re: Newbie

hi and welcome Carol --- I'm Carole with an "e"!! I'm glad you have decided to use Dr. Atkins plan. We use the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) and follow it to the letter....no shakes and bars allowed. Drink at least 64 ounces of pure water daily (nothing but ice added to that 64 ounces) and exercise is mandatory from day 1. If you don't have a copy of the book www.half.com and www.amazon.com have inexpensive copies.

We have several recipe sites that will help make your journey much tastier -- check them out. Read around the forum and start a journal to help track your progress. There are plenty of specialty forums which might interest you -- hope you post often. The monthly challenges has just started and I'm sure you would be able to join them still - it's a great way to be accountable to yourself and meet new people.

          Good luck to you.

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
          Filtered water
          Mineral water
          Spring water
          Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
          Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
          Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

            Re: Newbie

Carol, I know how to do it but I am horrible at explaining it. Try posting a "Ticker help please?" thread in the Main forum if no one picks up in this one today.
