  • Hello from Mickeyworld

big hello from Orlando. I guess I am in the "pre-induction" phase but have been losing weight already. I just wanted to get my head wrapped around Atkins first.

I am in a new job in Orlando as of March and also commute back to my home on weekends on the Gulf Coast 2 hours away. With all that going on I was challenged to get on this thing full bore. It has probably worked out better as I can concentrate on eating well and shopping for only what I need.

As it turns out a lot of people at work know a bunch about the Atkins way. One fellow has lost 70 lbs in one year. Very encouraging and a good reason to believe in the process. I still need to tweak a lot of things like coffee intake (40 oz a day with H&H and Splenda), bread etc. For the most part I have seen some results already but I need to commit to the whole deal.

    Re: Hello from Mickeyworld

hi and welcome -- the coffee is going to have to really be cut down because that's way to much....also we use cream not half and half. It would be to your advantage to buy the 2002 DANDR book and read it completely so you know exactly what you are doing and not some version that someone else did. www.half.com and www.amazon.com have inexpensive copies (mine was around $5.00 including shipping).

Here are some links to help get you started -- look around and commit to the plan as soon as you can.

Make sure you are eating induction recipes only until you are ready to move onto OWL.
Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t find a way and start today! Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

    Rules of Induction:

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

Are you thinking of including bread? That could be difficult.
You should try and see how you do without.

      Pre induction I like that

        Re: Hello from Mickeyworld

I am shooting for total induction by the 15th. I've just been working my way towards this as I would probably bail out if I went cold turkey into this. I will try to get that book. I have learned about Atkins by the success story I saw at my new job that I started in March and from 1-2 other that I knew were on it. I would have never given this a 2nd thought until I saw those results and what they ate. I see the need to get better educated but in the mean time i'm making progress.

my current pre-induction diet: (I work 2nd shift)

        Up at 10 am
        1 12 oz water
2 lg cups coffee with H&H and splenda

        1p
        3 eggs, 2 slices cheese, & salsa
3 brown & serve sausages or spam
1 12 oz water and small tomatoe juice

        3p
        12 oz water

5p 1 lg cup coffee with powdered creamer (bad) and splenda

        7p
work - salad bowl with 1/2 bag romaine, 5 grape tomatoes, 2 slices cheese plus salami, ham or chicken & Newmans reg dressing
        Or
        (2) 1 slice wheat bread with salami/cheese & mustard
        1 12 oz water

        snacks
        1 slim jim
        1 suger free jello
        1 bag peanuts
2 celery with salt or pnut butter (knock off the pnut butter...)
        1 12 oz water

        home 1a
1 12 oz water and spoon pnut butter

weekends are tough as I come home from staying in Orlando all week and my wife is not on Atkins. We are not in synch and I need for her to have the same foods when I get home. We will work that out next week. I spent last weekend cleaning out the cuboards.

I usually walk at break time at work 20 mins. Tues & Thurs. I do a 30 min walk or shoot basketball hoops. Then do a 20 min nautilus circuit.
Weekends I volunteer for a marching music group and do physical work as well.

I should probably put this in induction for more feedback.

            Re: Hello from Mickeyworld

4 wks from start of Induction and extended induction on June 15th. Down to 262# (302# on March 9). I did "pre-induction" to get me used to the jump into induction. The weight seems to be just falling off me now. The pants are very loose and on 2nd belt. Running out of holes. People have made comments on weight loss without me saying anything. Especially this week I was told even my face looks thinner. My ketosis stiks have been pink/purple for quite awhile.

One weekends I volunteer with a youth group and am away from the house most of the day. I have a 2 gallon water cooler for fluids and then do a Subway BMT salad with swiss cheese and add oil and vinegar. In the eve I may get chicken wings with medium garlic sauce or buffalo chicken and salad and diet coke.

Once you are on a roll there seems to be no end to this weight loss. (I hope). I am not perfect on this but it has made me very aware of my carb addicting behaviours. I hope I can stick with it for a lifetime.

                    Re: Hello from Mickeyworld

I'm still at it. Not perfect at times. Had to go on the road with our drum corps/youth group and suffered from sleep deprivation. When I get like that I run for the sugars and carbs. I have sleep apnea and need a cpap machine to get proper rest and didn't have it on the road.
I'm not working out any more than normal work duties and the field work I do on the weekends with the drum corps. I eat meat/salads at Subway while traveling if possible. (with only oil and vinegar dressing ).

Despite that I have lost another 10 lbs since the end of July. (54 lbs total ) and I look much thinner. I had to finally buy smaller pants and they are even loose on me. Belts are running out of holes.

Our season ends on labor day weekend and I can concentrat on doing better.
