  • Hello out there. 2nd time around

    Hello all,

Let me start by say I am tired of being overweight. I need to change. I am married with two children (4 and 13). I started atkins last Monday and I am already down ~8lbs. I know this is the only way I loose weight, I have tried almost everything else. I know all the basics since I have read the book more than once, I am just not good at the execution. The 1st time I was on Atkins, it seem effortless. I lost 35 lbs in two months. I have gained it all back plus some. Now I have a hard time with getting a variety in my diet and staying motivated. I know I have stated that I am motivated but yesterday and today I cheated. I decided to join for support; I must succeed. I have been reading this forum for two months, and I have found some great advise in my preparation to start. I hope to become an inspiration to others as you guys are to me.

I will be starting induction again tomorrow. I also hate exercise, but today I dusted off the treadmill and will start out slow. Hope to share good news with you all soon. I am currently 185 with a goal of 135. Wish me luck.

Good luck to all the other newbies and seasoned members.

Welcome back to Atkins Chevy -- now you need to make up your mind and stick with it that you want to loose the weight .... once your have your mind on the right course it will happen. Most 2nd timers don't loose as quickly as before but if you use the plan the way it was written you will succeed.

Check out STAC - second time around club -- you qualify to be there since you've been on Atkins before. They have a morning roll call that keeps people motivated and they are great support among themselves.

As far as needing variety there are plenty of recipe sites to check. Make sure you are using induction recipes to begin with -- there is so much to choose from you should never get bored or tired eating the same old thing.

Make sure you drink at least 64 oz of PURE water daily -- more is better but get at least the minimum in...nothing added but ice!

Exercise is mandatory - in January when I started I couldn't have told you the last time I did any real exercise (probably high school)....now I ride a bike, walk, I have a couple different series of exercise videos and I actually look forward to my exercise time!

Good luck to you.....make sure you follow the plan & you will be fine!! Here is some information I like to send to newbies!

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

    Rules of Induction:

    Induction Acceptable Foods List:

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

        Hi Chevy,

I am returning back to Atkins too! Well, last week was my first week back. My advice is... just make yourself do it!! No matter what, do not cheat! On days 2-4 I felt horrid... really miserable! I had headaches, extreme cravings, and my legs felt like logs.

But here I am a week later and I feel great! I am being completely honest here... by day 5 I no longer felt the need to cheat. I never did cheat, but now the cravings are really dying down.

I think the main thing is just get through it one day at a time! When I think of this is a lifestyle change for the rest of my life, it's hard. But when I think "today I'm going to stick to my induction plan" I can do it. Just remember there will be a time when we can add some carbs back!

I'm at a similar weight as you. Well, I started at 181 and by the end of week one I'm at 174. The success of my first week has completely motivated me to stay on track.

Also, I'm a mom as well, and that's another big motivator for me! I want to be more healthy and happy so I can be a better mom to my son.

Good luck and congrats on your loss so far!!!

Re: Hello out there. 2nd time around

              Thanks everyone,

I appreciate the encouragement. I know I can do this. I realize for me this has to be a lifestyle change. The excuses are what go me to where I am and if you all can do I.
I gave my husband a list of all the foods I can eat since he is the primary cook and gave him a lesson on hidden carbs. We also printed out some low carb induction receipes. Breakfast being my weak spot since I do not care for eggs.
Now that I think about it, I think what caused me to fall off the wagon was drinking atkins shakes. Although I kept losing with them they made me crave carbs. I was fine the first 4 days without them. I dont eat a lot of sweets but cereals (even the so called "healthy ones") and breads are just as bad for me. I read on another forum that they were acceptable during inductions; I also read on this forum that you should stay away until after induction. For me the right thing to do is stay away from anything sweet until I master induction.

Now that I am recommitted I will be working on getting in the exercise.

              Thanks again

Chevy - there are ways to eat eggs to get around the eggy taste. Last night I took an egg, 2 oz cream cheese (room temp), 1 pkt of splenda and a half cap of vanilla - mixed it all together - microwaved it 2 minutes with a little nutmeg on top and it didn't taste like an egg...but it is what I had for breakfast this morning - the taste was a little like custard - I had it with a couple slices of bacon after I had blood work and was driving back to the hospital to see my mom.....so easy and so good!! Check the recipe sites for more great recipes!

Thanks for the egg recipe. It sound a lot more tasty than regular scrambled/fried eggs. The eggy taste and smell turn me off half way through. I found lots of great looking recipes today (I was supposed to be working) that I am planning on trying this week. I stopped for groceries on my way home and i am excited to see what I can cook up.

                    [QUOTE=sweetsherry;1081812]Hi Chevy,

... I felt horrid... really miserable! I had headaches, extreme cravings, and my legs felt like logs. ...

I felt the same way the first couple of days. I had a headache for 3 days, everything felt heavier, and for some strange reason my back started to hurt. In hindsight I'd say I was having coffee withdrawal headaches (I quite...temporarily) which made them more intense. The back ache was probably me deflecting, and the heaviness and cravings were truely side affects of the adjustment to the plan.
Anyway, I am feeling better than ever about this lifestyle change and I cant wait for it to feel "normal" or "effortless" and I know it will soon.

                    Thanks for the well wishes.
