  • Introducing Paula

Hi, my name is Paula and I live in Hamilton, Ontario Canada.

I'm 48 years old and over the past 6 VERY stressful years I have gone from 126 lbs to 160lbs. Now it is time for big change.

My 18 year old step son is the inspiration for beginning Atkins. We are a blended family and Z. lives with his mom in Arizona. He visits us every June for a few weeks and he has been on Atkins for about 3 years now. He knows it inside out...so I decided to take advantage of his expertise and instead of going crazy trying to figure out what to feed him this year, I decided to join him!

I am just into the second week of induction and am weighing in at 152 to 155 lbs. My Ketostiks show that the fat is indeed fueling me. I feel more energy and clarity and I hope I can continue this journey to return to my initial weight of 126.

Now if I can just get hubby to follow suit!

How sweet Suzanne! Thank you for the warm welcome.

A question: Can you tutor me on all those nifty signature items folks have here? I made a ticker, but how do I attach it to my posts? What are all the badges etc?

      Thanks,
      Paula

        Re: Introducing Paula

For your ticker to appear correctly, you need to copy the URL string from the ticker page into your signature page on the User CP link (above left on the 2 blue lines).

When you edit your signature, you can add any stats, mini-goals, pictures or other info you want to appear whenever you post.

Badges are usually challenge awards. There are many challenges to participate in on a regular basis. Check out the Challenges Forum.

          Re: Introducing Paula

hi and welcome to ADBB -- even though you have your own Atkins "expert" it would be wise for you to get a copy of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book and read it cover to cover. If you follow the plan as it's written you will have great success with the plan. If you can’t find one locally www.half.com and www.Amazon.com have them pretty inexpensively - mine with shipping was under $5.00.

Nutrition is different for a teenager and an adult so make sure you are getting enough to eat and are taking the correct supplements.

So you have recipe suggestions here are links to the recipe sites we use. Also, use FitDay to track your daily carbs/protein/fat ratios and to log your net carb totals for the day.

Drink at least 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added) daily - more is better. Here is some other information I like to send to new members.

Make sure you are eating induction recipes only until you are ready to move onto OWL.
Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t find a way and start today! Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

www.fitday.com get a free membership and track your daily food intake. Track NET CARBS daily … and also use the journal, for your daily moods, etc….it’s a great tool to help you.

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
          Filtered water
          Mineral water
          Spring water
          Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
          Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
          Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

Hi Paula and welcome. My hubby never wants to get on the bandwagon and hates to be nagged so I quietly do my thing and sooner or later he decides to join me. Leading by example is a great idea and how smart to enlist your step son! Wshing you success!
