  • New Mommy, Not new to Atkins, starting again.....

Hi all. I am Amy; 29 years old, had my first baby April of 08.
I was on Atkins from 2001 until pregnant. I have at least 50 lbs to lose, that is my first goal, but CANNOT get motivated to start. Will do fine for 1-2 weeks, and the "CHEAT". Any ideas, I need to get this weight off, and want to be healthy for me, and my family.
Starting Atkins 14 day Induction: Sunday, June 14th 2009

    Starting Weight:

    1st Goal: 182

    Goal: 157

    Hey Amy,

Congrats on the new baby! I can sense that you are so frustrated and I am sorry to hear that. I am no stranger to wanting to lose weight but having no motivation to actually do it.

I think that you should just take it one day at a time. I does take a few weeks for us to develop a new behavior. So I feel that if you can do this more often than not then you are on the right path. You eventually get to the point that its second nature and you don't feel the need to cheat. Little by little and one step at a time. And if your not motivated for yourself, do it because you want to be there for your family for many, many years to come. And if you did it before, there's nothing stopping you from doing it again!I don't know you, but I believe you can do it! Start as soon as you can.

Remember, one day, and one step at a time!

Amy, there is not magic in this. You need to really commit in your head to the plan. If you can't commit permanently, then commit for three months. 3 months you can give up anything and survive. But you have to really steel yourself to sticking with it no matter what. Wish I could say it is easy, but it is not. It is very rewarding when you do it, though!

        Hi Amy

Congrats on the new baby I was also on Atkins until I fell pregnant and then put it all back on again (as had a second baby too!).

I got back on track on 27 October and am now half way to goal.

I think you just need to get motivated by reading the book and this board and watching some weightloss programs such as Biggest Loser (it works for me anyway).

I can't tell you how much better I feel now and how much easier it is to run after the kids. So worth it.

        You can do it!!!

          Welcome Amy!

Don't beat yourself up over a small cheat because we all do that at times but you must get right back on plan instead of throwing in the towel. That's the way to success.

Make a list of all the things that will improve in your life if you stick to the plan and post it on your fridge. And don't forget the one about a good role model for your baby!

          Good luck to you!

            Amy~
I'm in the same boat as you... but I don't think it is lack of motivation. It is more along the line that we still desire food and find it to be pleasurable. I mean each day you can't do what you want to do, each day you look at your little one and want to be the best you can... don't you think you are motivated???

I was at 417 and now I'm down to 373.4.. however it has taken me 10 months... why is that b/c of this same thing, follow for a week, few days, then cheat for a week or few days then try again.

I feel happy eating this WOE but at the same time I still want everything else to eat and I don't have enough money or time to find an alternative all the time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

The only thing I can advise is what I tell myself... I'm worth the change, I'm capable of changing, and I will change today, tomorrow, or when the time is right, mean while just keep trying.

Feel free to pm me anytime.

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

Re: New Mommy, Not new to Atkins, starting again.....

It's been said above -- you have to really want to loose the weight and do everything you can to make it happen. When you feel the need to cheat stop and figure out what's going on....stress, hunger, boredom, being upset, tired? What is making you want to cheat? Drink a glass of water, wait a few minutes and see if you still want to eat.....go for a walk, jog in place, do something -- just don't sit there - get up and get your mind off of food. Within a few days or even weeks you won't have those urges. Yes we all have our weak times but you have to learn to get past them. Instead of grabbing something that isn't healthy have plenty of induction food in the fridge that you can grab in a hurry -- meat, slices of cheese, veggies cut up and ready to eat.....make your "cheats" legal food.

No one can make you do this, it's your choice - how well you do depends on you.

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people. Just remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

This is from the "Read before you start" thread in the 14 day Induction area:
Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
              Filtered water
              Mineral water
              Spring water
              Tap water

After your 64 ounces daily you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
              Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
              Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases
