  • New to Atkins - Starting Sunday

    Hi everyone,

I am new to aktins. I've tried everything, weight watchers, la weight loss, cookie diet, nutrisystem.....and here I am. I have 2 children. After having my son 8 years ago, I lost 35 pounds on LA Weight Loss. I felt great. I hade my daughter 3 years ago...and have not been able to shed the pounds. I would like to lose about 40 pounds. Any advice is appreciated. If anyone could post some induction menu ideas...that would be great.
I do not eat fish at all....so I guess I am limited to chicken and turkey...an occasional red meat. I would love to hear from you all.

    Thanks.

Re: New to Atkins - Starting Sunday

hi and welcome Cheryl -- there is no reason to limit red meat - you can have it when you want it. As far as induction meals that is really a personal decision -- what some others eat might not be foods you like. I'm sending you links to recipe sites so you can find foods you like and will eat.

Here is some good info for you to read. Good luck!

One of the best things you can do is purchase the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution book (DANDR) – if you can’t find one locally www.half.com and www.Amazon.com have them pretty inexpensively – mine was under $5.00 with shipping.

Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t - find a way and start today! Most of us aren’t active before Atkins – but once you get going you’ll find it’s so easy to carve out some time each day to walk, run, swim find something and just do it!

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people – you can use them further up the Rungs but not to begin with. Also remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

Here are links that will help get you started. Make sure you are preparing induction recipes only until you are ready to move onto OWL.

    Rules of Induction:

    Induction Acceptable Foods List:

www.fitday.com get a free membership and track your daily food intake. Track NET CARBS daily … and also use the journal, for your daily moods, etc….it’s a great tool to help you.

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

After your 64 ounces you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (may cause a stall in weight loss)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons

*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

      Welcome to the board, Cheryl!

I think you'll find that Atkins is easier to stick to than those other diets were because it fills you up so that you're not hungry all the time.

Keep up posted on your progress!

Re: New to Atkins - Starting Sunday

Welcome! Glad to have you here.

Here are a couple of ideas:

breakfast - omelets, flaxseed muffins (check our recipe threads), quiches (no crust and quick to warm up)

lunches- Caesar, Cobb and Chef salads -just make sure no croutons and choose your dressings wisely. Also ground beef or turkey sauteed with ginger and garlic and sesame oil with onion. Add chopped cucumber and roll up in a lettuce leaf

dinners- mashed cauliflower puree with butter and cheese whipped in is a great mashed potato substitute and any veggie with cheese melted over is good. I also like handfuls of fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley or basil chopped into salads. They kick up the flavor a notch and keeps them from getting boring.

Re: New to Atkins - Starting Sunday

Wecome! Hope you find all the help and support that I found when I first started! These folks here are great.

The number one thing I did to be able to stick to this was tell everyone in my family and friends that I was doing Atkins. My personality is one that doesn't like for anyone to think I will fail at something so in telling them I have forced myself to not cheat or give up. It's worked! I haven't cheated at all. And God knows how much I want a bowl of cereal!!!!

Hard to get enough fat from turkey and chicken.Ribeyes and country pork ribs are very fatty and will hold you for hours.Salmon is good but i guess you have crossed fish out.
