  • Trying!!!!

This is my 2nd time trying Atkins. I did it after my 2nd child in 2002 for support really of my x-husband who was doing it and for support of a coworker. My x-husband lost 16 lbs. during induction. I lost zero. I also cheated every weekend and was loosy goosy with my carbs! I was about 150 lbs back then and was satisfied with that weight so I didn't really commit to the diet. Well now I'm 203 lbs. I've had another child and gotten a divorce and quit working and started school. The pounds have just kept on coming! I recently got engaged and don't want to be this weight. It's unhealthy and unattractive. I don't know which is making me do this more. My fiance bought me a treadmill so I'm dedicated to exercising and trying this. This is my 5th day and I'm a very visual person. I don't feel hungry, really. I just WANT some carbs!!! Coming to this forum has been motivating. I hope I can just make it thru induction without cheating!! I wish everyone luck and support.

welcome to ADBB!! When you "want" carbs just remember they are the reason you are the weight you are today. This time make sure you only eat foods on the acceptable food list, drink at least 64 ounces of pure water daily and get on your treadmill daily!

Here is some info that may help. Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people – you can use them further up the Rungs but not to begin with. Also remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

www.fitday.com get a free membership and track your daily food intake. Track NET CARBS daily … and also use the journal, for your daily moods, etc….it’s a great tool to help you.

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
      Filtered water
      Mineral water
      Spring water
      Tap water

Crystal Lite, sugar free drinks of any kind are not acceptable – PURE water is the only thing that count toward your daily water intake.

After your 64 ounces you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
      Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
      Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (causes weight stall in many people)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons
*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

      Good luck on your journey.

        Re: Trying!!!!

Thank you soo much!!! I have been eating those Atkins bars that say safe for Induction. Maybe they are stalling me, because even though I'm on day 5, I think I should have seen some significant weight loss, and I don't see it. I was thinking maybe magically they'll appear on day 7. I'll stop with the bars. Thanks again for the links and the support. I soooooo need it! And the advice on water is good. I was thinking my sugar free drinks made with water were counted in!!! I'm refocused now. Back to the drawing board.

You have already made a huge step by recognizing that you "want" them and don't need them. Its helpful to cruise the low carb recipe sites for some snacks you can have on hand that will fill that void. Some of my favorites are cheese slices microwaved for a crispy crunchy chip alternative and cream cheese stirred up with a dash of vanilla and Splenda for a cheesecake like flavor - but only use a tablespoon or so- when you want a rich dessert substitute.

Prepare your kitchen for the Atkins way of eating and just start. If you being overweight isn't enough of a motivation what is it going to take?????
Just start - it's that easy.

Just start. You may mess it up but keep trying. Eventually the bulb will turn on and you will really commit.

                    Re: Trying!!!!

I actually got motivated by reading this forum. Seeing people's before and after pics. I've always looked really nice in my clothes and now I can't fit a thing in my closet. I don't know if I've lost yet, because I didn't weigh until several days into it, but my waistline does look smaller. I look trimmer. So we'll see. Also I cheated yesterday and today. Got discouraged because my stupid ketone sticks hadn't changed colors. I really want the fat burning to come!! And if I'm not spilling ketones, how will I ever get to ketosis? Was kinda bummed about it so I just ate some bread and dessert. I don't know if this diet is gonna work for me, longterm. I'm beginning to think that I'm one of the few people that this diet as stated doesn't work for. I can't get any more strict on my eating though. I was following induction pretty closely. I ate some of the Atkins bars approved for induction, but that shouldn't have kept my body from ketosis. I only ate one a day, and thats only 3 net carbs. So I dunno. Still frustrated.

                      Re: Trying!!!!

Ebony, the sticks don't always turn for everyone and I found them unreliable. A much better way to tell is with your nose. Does your urine stink? Does your breath smell bad or do you have an off taste in your mouth? Are you less hungry? If the answer to these questions is yes then you are already in ketosis in spite of what the sticks say (or don't say). Also my urine takes on a more neon yellow as opposed to the former golden yellow when I am in ketosis. Look for these things and put the sticks away.

                        Re: Trying!!!!

Thank you chinadoll. I have a slow metabolism anyway so my fiance says maybe its just gonna take longer for me to get there. When I take medicine that is supposed to kick in at 30-40 minutes it doesn't have any effect on me until about 2 hours sometimes! So maybe thats just my body. I don't know about the breath because I have allergies and usually can't smell anyway! lol But I definitely see that my waste is slimmer.
