  • Hello and Puhleeze Help

I've only joined this wonderful site today, but I've peeped in since June 2nd when I began Atkins. Thx for a really cool site of hope & inspiration. I began the Induction Phase on June 2nd and I found it so simple that I'm not even tempted to cheat yet I've only lost 15 lbs. What am Idoing wrong? I workout 6 days a week for no less than 2 hours per visit...yesterday i took 2 spin classes (back 2 back). Some of you seem to lose a lb a day....what is a normal expected weight loss (daily, weekly, monthly)? Oh yeah, ANY suggestions 2 get my bowels moving again?

there is no "normal" amount - your body is different that anyone elses body - 15 pounds is a great amount of weight to have lost this far. Have you gone on to the rungs or are you doing extended induction? Many people find their bodies take time to adjust once the first 2 weeks of induction are done and find that moving to Rung 1 and adding 5 additional net carbs daily help them start loosing again.

Are you drinking enough water? Dr Atkins advises we drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added) daily - many here drink half their weight a day in water to help loose the weight and flush impurities from their system. Personally I drink 150 ounces of water a day and there are times I drink more than that, depending on the day and what I'm doing.

The fact you can do 2 spin classes back to back to admirable -- I ride 25 miles daily on a stationary bike and do exercise videos or walk and it's taken me since January to work up to that.

Flax seed or psyllium husk is what is recommended to keep your bowels moving. When using either of these you need to make sure you drink additional water to move it through your bowels - if you don't drink enough water it can backfire and bind you up.

It doesn't sound like you have read the 2002 DANDR book - that's the edition we go by on this forum. It has a wealth of information to help you get the weight off. You can usually find one online fairly cheaply if you can't find one locally.

The Century Club can help give you additional support through your journey, check them out!

Here is some additional information to help:

Drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day, including:
    Filtered water
    Mineral water
    Spring water
    Tap water

Crystal Lite, sugar free drinks of any kind are not acceptable – PURE water is the only thing that count toward your daily water intake.

After your 64 ounces you can have the following:
Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
    Club soda
Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three Tablespoons a day; note carb content)
    Decaffeinated coffee or tea*
Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda); be sure to count the carbs (causes weight stall in many people)
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and should not contain aspartame)
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three Tablespoons
*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine.
Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases

Exercise is not an option – it is mandatory ….. don’t say you can’t - start today! Most of us aren’t active before Atkins – but once you get going you’ll find it’s so easy to carve out some time each day to walk, run, swim find something you like and just do it!

Atkins bars and shakes are NOT acceptable during induction – they are made with non-induction ingredients and cause stalling in many people – you can use them further up the Rungs but not to begin with. Also remember - if it’s not on the acceptable food list – it doesn’t go in your mouth!

Here is a thread that will give you loads of information to be able to follow the plan correctly. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html

15 lbs is over 16% of what you have to lose! In only 3 weeks, that's awesome!

So how much did you lose during the first two weeks? There's a table in Chapter 13 of DANDR 2002 that allows you to estimate your degree of metabolic resistance based on your 2-week losses. Did you figure your resistance from that table?

You'll typically only see people losing a pound per day during induction. That pound is mostly water being shed as glycogen stores are depleted.

During the rest of the process, you can expect 1 to 3 pounds per week.

Overtraining and undereating can both have a negative effect on those numbers.

Two spin classes in one day. OH MY. You really rock. I have not dared to do one yet. Maybe soon. You've given me inspiration here.

            Re: Hello and Puhleeze Help

Hi sz8, Welcome. I lost about 5-6 pounds on Induction (this time) and fight hard to lose about a pound a week. I exercise like crazy, drink 100 ounces of water a day and still it comes off slowly. But I am at an age and hormone level where most of my firends are gaining so I am not complaining. My son went on Atkins with only 25 pounds to lose and lost half of it during Induction so it is really different for everyone.

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

              Re: Hello and Puhleeze Help

One thing I didn't type in my first post. Someone in your own home could be on the plan with you and could loose more or less while eating the same amounts you do -- men loose differently than women. Men tend to loose weight much easier and faster than women do. But I still maintain that you will loose at your own rate and can't go by what someone else does.

As far as getting things moving again - make sure you are drinking your water, and take 1 tbsp of psyllium husk or flax meal (ground flax seed) daily.

You've probably heard that muscle weighs more than fat - that really is true! Another reason you're not seeing quite the results you expect from the scale, could be because you're toning up too! Good for you - keep it up! And thanks for sharing...it's quite inspiring!
